Was topping up my oil today after an oil change last week and, being the idiot that I am, stopped concentrating for a minute and over filled it :-| It's only about 5mm above the max line but I'd rather rectify it all the same. Am I stuck pulling the sumo plug out or does anybody have a handier way to drain that little bit? I thought of getting a turkey baster and sticking some kind of tube on the end and putting that down into the dipstick hole but that nearly sounds like more hassle than pulling the sump plug.

I have a proper Pela oil pump but you could mirror this with a large syringe, Turkey baser etc and some thin tubing eg vacuum tube.
Draw some out the dipstick tube until you reach the level or slacken the sump plug over a container but just a few turns and let it drip out.

How much did you put in. The mini engine/gearbox should take 4.8L.

Well I was just topping it up, I changed the oil last week (put in roughly 4.8L then) and it was down to about 5mm above the min line today.

Any oil spots on the floor, leaking from the engine?

I would not bother for 5mm, I have done the same before and just left it.

Strangely enough, no. I think I may be in possession of the only mini that doesn't leak oil :)

It's probably not good for the engine though is it? I know it's only ~125ml of oil but the way I'm looking at it is if it were 5mm below min I'd never just leave it.

Likewise, I wouldn't bother.

You match / measure up the stick on the outside to see where the level is likely to be, bear in mind it'll be lower when the oil is being thrown and splashed about.

If you really had to, remove the filler cap and you'd be able to siphon via the dipstick hole. A's have a tube that goes below the oil level, A+ sticks just fit in the block, with a seal - that doesn't often.

If it's gone from max to just above minimum in a week, with no leaks, it must be burning a fair amount? That 5mm above max will soon burn off :-/

Went in through the dipstick hole with some tube attached to a turkey baster, got it down to a hair above the max line so I'm happy enough with that. Moral of the story: I am incapable of doing even the simplest of jobs with a hangover :D

I don't think it actually lost that much oil, the oil level was just settling after doing the oil change.

The Dipsticks are seldom accurate, more of a guide, so I wouldn't be worried about + / - 5 mm on the Dip Stick.

Pour in the 4.8 Litres, run it, let it settle, then make a note of where 4.8 litres actually is on the Dip Stick.

I really wouldn't worry.

We used to regularly run with the oil level over 'max' on rallies to prevent the risk of oil surge or of running low in a Cooper 'S' which might do only 75 to 100 miles/per pint. It was never a problem. Then there is the issue of dip-stick accuracy.

I heard its called hydrolock when the engine is overfilled with oil. As bad as having no enough oil in the engine. Im not sure how much you would have to overfill to cause  this to happen though??
