Because thats the way professionals wire it Brian, and its another 5amps your asking the Ignition switch that a 1/3 of its continous rating. Boy racers wire in switches Electricians use Relays ;D

Original minis didn't use relays.

 

 

None the less, I think KernowCooper has offered some good help and some very good advice.

In the even of engine stopped and fuel pump running would fitting an oil pressure switch, which removes voltage feed to fuel pump, instead of an Inertia Switch be an alternative. Less likely to suffer false triggering; engine stops, no oil pressure, no voltage feed to fuel pump.

I know of a few guys who have done that, however, it's not as straight forward as it may first seem. You need to put in either an over-ride or a timer, to get the fuel pump working, so the engine can start, and eventually get some oil pressure up, to turn on the fuel pump. A bit like the chicken and the egg if you like.

In fact the biggest risk of fire in an accident is not the fuel pump continuing to run, but a split hydraulic pipe spraying the exhaust manifold with fluid.

The incidence of fires following crashes is very minor and is normally the result of a ruptured petrol tank and sparks from the collision.

That's not to say the inertia switches are a bad idea as anything which improves overall safety has to be good.

I'd never seen those before, but yes, I don't see why that wouldn't work. I see he also recommends fitting a relay.

 

I have to say, I don't run any kind of automatic cut out, I'm not say that's good practice, and safety should come first.

I think that's because switch contacts wouldn't handle current drawn by fuel pump ;D
