Sorry to have to do this, but:
The union FLAG is what we are discussing. The Union JACK is completely another thing.........
But I am very interested in your concerns. I think you'll have no problems with the roof and the Union Flag, but I would suggest that the St. George Cross would be another issue. When I see the Scottish Flag or the Welsh Dragon being waved, I'm
so envious that sometimes England as an individual country is somewhat lacking. The issue arises when the national flag was highjacked a few decades ago, and is now an adpoted symbol for far-right political views, eg. the NF.
St Georges Day passes without much fuss but over the Irish Sea and north of Hadrian's Wall, things are very different on their respective national days.
Go with the Union Flag, it reminds me of my Mini-Cross Scalectrix from the 1980's!!

I need to get one somewhere on my Mini, I like to fly the flag on any occasion.
If someone gets offended by it then its a double bonus for me anyway, as that type of person would be someone I would enjoy upsetting.

I am not fussed either way for the flag or very patriotic really, I did not choose to be born here but at the same time when I see a Union Flag on a Japanese car or Cooper stripes on a Suzuki Swift it boils my piss! My neighbour has a Skoda yeti that is Chili red with a black roof just like my Bini Clubman, now I know the Bini debate rages on here at TMF but Jeez I think there is a bit more of a link to Cooper with a Bini than Skoda has?! Lol.
I think the union jack roof (yep its a union flag but thats not what the general public would say when describing the "cool Mini with a union jack roof" they saw to friends is it?) is so linked to the Mini that it would not register even in a numbskulls brain that you were being pro anything really, you can go in any toy shop and buy a model of one with a union jack roof and even a Bini one to match to annoy the Bini haters

I have no problem what so ever with what 'other' people think of it, or if they may be offended by it!!!
All I'm concerned about is making my pride and joy a target for unsavoury types ... As plenty of you have said you have had no problem, the union 'flag' will go on at the weekend .....

i know where you are coming from, i had a toyota celica show car and i parked it in tesco's car park and went to buy some bits. when i come out someone had sprayed chocolate milkshake over the car and even put a note under my wiper blade to say i was a show off for owning such a car.
but i have the union jack on my car and never had any problems at all. if anything i have people commenting on how it would be rude not to have it on the mini. and at this point i think we need to see some minis with them fitted to support your decision

Not sure what the other Union Jack is that you refer to - BUT - The flag It has been recognised as the Union Jack since the 1600s when the small Union flag was flown on HM ships, although the RN didnt 'officially' recognise the name in documentation until 1902 when it referred to both names for the flag it has been a recognised name for the Union flag for many many years.
I seem to recall that in several regimental standing orders the flag was referred to as both the Union Jack or the Union flag (too many guard duties!!! )
