Maccers, I dont get any petrol smell at all now in boot after fitting new breather hose - not sure if MPI even has that?  Is the seal around the filler cap OK?

Did Jason find his problem?

Yes check the seal on the petrol cap as when I walk past mine I regularly smell a bit (don't they vent?). Again this isn't the strong 'fresh' petrol smell. The one you can't get off your shoes.

Replace the breather hose in the boot, maybe the fuel one too. They aren't expensive  :proud:  Or perhaps the tank is porous somewhere like near the filler?

I heard all this petrol on hot engines/exhausts is nonsense and that petrol can only ignite with a spark, not just heat. Don't quote me on it though  >_<

It isn't really nonsense, it does indeed need a spark, but the problem is that a little touch of static electricity is more than enough :P

I got caught without any tools on a Sunday when I noticed a strong smell of petrol coming from under the bonnet. Had a look only to find petrol dripping onto exhaust manifold. To cut a long story short, I'd recently replaced old fuel pipes with new braided from Burdens. AA man found inner rubber hose cracking and disintegrating. Unfortunately, could not see leak because of braiding. Suggested I replaced all fuel lines with correct type for unleaded fuel ... I didn't even know there was a difference. He also suggested forgetting braided as it's not possible to determine condition of rubber, or whatever they use these days.
