My 1980 Pickup has a tandem brake master cylinder with front / rear split dual circuit brakes via a bulhead mounted pressure reducing valve.

The original master cylinder is a GMC167 with the black cable tie around the body.

Can i upgrade to the newer, cheaper and hopefully better GMC227 (yellow band) master cylinder ?

Would i have to change the pressure reducing valve ?

CAREFUL! The 1980 pickup with the GMC167 tandem master cylinder was piped up as a diagonal split, NOT front rear and has no pressure regulator valve.
Check carefully what state your car is. IE is it piped diagonally, if so it will need to be changed to front rear split in order to fit the GMC227 yellow band master cylinder and you will need the appropriate pressure regulator valve FAM7821 along with the appropriate pipe work.
The GMC167 master cylinder is still available at Minispares if you want to just replace this.

Thanks A-Cell, I am pretty sure it is front to rear, although this does seem old hat.

There is definitley a pressure reducing valve on the bulkhead. It looks the same as the one in the link Moke Spider put in post 2
