Can anyone give me any guidance here as I really don't know much about car stereos and compatibility etc.

Long story short - I have a kenwood head unit in the mini that has just about had it (the head unit, not the mini!) and needs to go so I'm looking at my options - I also have a ford focus that I'm about to sell with a 10 disc CD changer (Sony cdx605)  and rather than give it away with the car, I thought I could take it out and put it under the back seat of the mini.

Had a quick look online and started seeing BUS compatibility but no idea what it means.

What sort of head unit would I need to swap this over and do I need anything else as the focus has steering column mounted controls?

Thanks in advance

Very few Sony CD players(and it would have to be a Sony) have a port for a multichanger these days.  There may be some out there, but I have no idea of the model numbers.

I'm not sure what you mean by the steering controls on the Focus?

Ah I see, our possibly look at second hand anyway. There are controls on the steering rack that let you switch between disks etc

The operating instructions say it has RCA audio outputs. If the changer has manual disc change controls (ie, buttons on the changer itself) then you could wire up the changer to an AUX in on any headunit with AUX input and then change the CD's manually.

That's how I see it at the moment at least...

wouldnt it be better to get a head unit wih a usb port and use a flash drive which will have the same capacity as all the cds in the changer?

Makes sense but there are no controls on the changer itself, only through the head unit and the steering rack control

Of course, just thought as I had it I'd see if I can make use of it

Unfortunately it would have to be a Sony product specifically designed to work with that changer then unfortunately.

Assuming that you have a Ford head unit and an interface that connects to the Sony CD changer, the steering wheel controls are controlling the head unit, which in turn controls the changer.  A separate Sony head unit is required for the changer to work.
