Which is better? I have made around 2 or 3 posts about this but was wondering which is more preferable, obviously it's down to opinion and I would like to hear them.  ;D

I am planning to buy a Mini in the future and I am considering certain cheaper Mini's to go for. I initially planned to buy a 1970s MK3 or MK4 Mini 1000 or 850 however these are becoming much more costly in today's standards.

I'm aware that it is not choice when buying a cheap Mini as the model you are looking for could be expensive; however due to the stylish looks of the 60's and 70's Minis I was planning to buy an affordable 1980's Mini and do an almost 70's replica with center speedo and original 10" wheels. It has been done before on several Mr. Bean replicas!

Which Mini would be best for this replication?

exactly. Mini prices for 80's cars go on condition over model. the Mayfair was a better trimmed car than the Cite E But i would rather have the more basic City if it was in better condition than the Mayfair.

Plus with trims being the only difference and your desire to do a 70's rep, it really makes no odds

Many Citys have the centre speedo while the more 'upmarket' Mayfair always had the 'Clubman' Dash so for a retro car the City is closer in spec as regards the dash.

My City had the two clocks infront of the steering wheel rather than the center one!

As the prices for standard 80s cars are going up you would be better getting a car already modified at least partly then make it how you want, if you do start with a standard version either keep the original parts or sell them on here, I wish I hadn't thrown away all the rare nimbus grey parts over the years!

The best model of mini is ALWAYS the least rusty one :-)

I'm with Pete, if you're not going to keep it standard then it won't matter which model you buy and not worth limiting yourself to finding a city or a Mayfair. Just find any mini with the least holes in it and make it your own.
Oh, and do it quick before the prices rise even higher.

I think the City went over to 2 clocks in the mid 80's when it changed from City to City E

It did, in 84-85 when they all changed to 12" wheels and disc brakes the clocks moved from center to twin binnacle however I seem to recall seeing some early 12" citys with centre clocks?

From about '86 on the only real differences between City and Mayfair were opening rear windows, flock seats, a tacho, and the diff.

Didn't the Mayfair have alloys?

Not as standard but, they were available as an option and they were the same alloys as fitted to the Chelsea and Ritz minis.
