Slight White Smoke From Exhaust

Best Answer spiguy , 17 June 2015 - 12:34 PM

if you have been doing alot of short runs it could just be excess moisture being driven off. Is there any emulsion / gunk on the underside of the oil filler cap?  Best thing you can do is take it for a good long run and re-assess.

Burning a little bit of brake fluid should not do any harm IMO, though the cause would be better off being rectified (if it was that) as it would mean leaking seals in the braking system which is not ideal. I don't think it is that anyway, I watched your video and it looks like water vapour to me. Even just a cold exhaust can cause that as it is a long metal pipe which will cool the gasses as they travel along it such that the water in the exhaust gas condenses.

Getting everything nice and hot and a long drive should give you a  better idea of what is going on.

I know this was a long time ago but I think I have exhaust smoke / loss of brake fluid problem. How is it fixed? What’s the part that fails that allows brake fluid get where it shouldn’t?

Thanks. I’ve recently replaced that part.

The only place that has fluid is the cylinder. The servo could be full of previously leaked fluid,Steve..

I changed the master cylinder, most of the hard brake lines, introduced flexi hoses to the master clinder, has front calipers and rear drums off. All drained. Reassembled. Pumped through and bled. No old fluid remaining.

And I took the servo apart and fitted replacement / service parts

So it’s probably something I’ve done wrong. How to check? Signs of brake fluid at the manifold end of the stiff and chunky vacuum hose?

have you renewed master or just seals? have had issue with moisture at bottom of mater cylinder bore causing damage so seals would not repair issue so needed new cylinder. could check for this if still leaking to servo

It was a new, complete unit from mini spares

easy to check as you have flexy hoses on master, remove from servo if it's leaking will be obvious signs at end of cylinder and you can also inspect inside servo, admittedly only partially, at the same time. this is the only way it can get into inlet

Yes. Flexi hoses. I’ll disconnect and check. If it is leaking from a new (approx 2 years old and hardly used) part, is it worth fitting a service kit of seals or bite the bullet and get (another) new unit?

Brake master removed. No leaks. Dry as a bone. Now wondering what else could be behind the white smoke. I haven’t cast a Papal vote so it can’t be that.
