Okay been out to the workshop and metered up a spare complete SPi unit from a car.
At throttle closed (and loss motion correctly adjusted) I have 0.814K ohms and full throttle (operated at the throttle body) is 4.65K ohms.
Conclusion the range of the TPS is reduced after mounting into the SPi throttle body and setting up of the throttle cable and linkages.
Span is 0.8K ohms to 4.7 K ohms with a smooth transition as the throttle was opened.

New TPS ordered from Somerford Minis - good job it's just been payday! (I found a cheaper one somewhere else, ordered it and immediately got a phone call to say they were out of stock... :-(  )

Sounds like it needs replaced. Could be the lever is getting a little bit of a twist on it when mounted or having the clamping force of the fixing bolts is changing the amount of contact of the wiper arm. These throttle pots are fitted to some 90's era Rover cars if you have access to a car breakers. You could always cut it open and see if you can clean it up. I have managed to 'repair' one in the past, best to get a new one if possible though

You can have some limited success with a squirt of WD 40 but in reality once these wear they need replacing.

The only issue is the cost....now about £150!

And I'm guessing one of these won't cut the mustard, will it...?

I got lucky a few years ago and a guy from 16v minis who is in our club gave me 3. They are also used on some other Rovers, I think the later metro and maybe the 214 K series engines. Had the same part number JZX something or another. I bet if you can find them listed as for these cars they would be cheaper!

I found the proper SPi sensor from a brilliant Honda garage in Scotland who happened to have one in stock (and let me have it for £75 - new in its original packaging!!).

I fitted it yesterday and the difference is amazing - not so much as a stutter this morning, even with my foot down in fourth at low revs. Yay! :proud:

Thanks so much for all your help and advice, everyone!

Hmmm... had a little stutter this morning. Time to check the vac pipes and (because I've got one kicking around) change the oxygen sensor...

must have been some old spares stock from the joint Rover / Honda days (eg 214, 414 etc). I think they used the same part.

Right. It's started happening again, so this weekend I'm going to:

  • check the vac hoses and fuel trap for leaks/kinks/blockages
  • take out the ECU, put it in a warm place and gently pop some cotton wool in the MAP sensor port
  • check there's no crud in the nozzle that comes from the manifold (the one that the pipe going to the fuel trap goes on to)
  • replace the oxygen sensor (if I can get to the wretched thing!)
  • check the adjustment of the throttle cable
  • check all sensor connectors/wiring

Anything else I should be doing?

Check the wiring to the sensors, especially the TPS although I'm guessing you did that. Seems odd to have an intermittent fault.
