Maybe drop guessworks a PM. He is a gearbox guru and does this for a living.

If you remove the engine, strip the gearbox off of it, and subsequently re-fit the engine onto the box and put it back into the car you will save many hours labour (probably around 12 hours) at, say £50 per hour.
The gearbox build will be around 7 hours @ £50 per hour for a full strip and re-build, plus parts at several hundred. Add a full engine gasket set.

Parts to do the whole gearbox would be around 500 - 600 quid for new bits.

Go to the Guess-works website and play with the numbers, including shipping to get an idea. I had mine shipped from him with no exchange all the way to the USA and it was cheaper than trying to get one on this side of the pond.

I've just spotted his/her other thread - noisy in 1,2 & 3 and now can't get gears.
If you can get 4th but not 1,2 or 3 that would suggest something pretty terminal has happend, stripped 1st motion or somthing equally painful.
If you're handy with the spanners, get the engine and box out yourself. If not the the price you have would seem about right.

Yes 4th still works and 1st just about, I haven't really got the space or time to strip it myself to be honest and it may lead to divorce.
I was just looking to see if the price sounded about what it should be. It is a mini specialist who has been building them for 35 years so I know he would do a better job then me and comes with 12 month warranty

Time in service isn't always an indicator of quality but that's by-the-by.
If I were in your shoes I'd probably insist on a replacement box from a known supplier (Guessworks is the general go-to) this would help fix the costs somewhat. While it's entirely possible for even a competent amateur to rebuild a box, it's time consuming and that's the real expense!
