I know its been asked before but does anybody now the exact angle of the taper reamer needed to cut the correct tapers into the arms ?

I need to make custom arms for a space frame Mini but would still like to use the original ball joints as they last a lot longer than Rose Joints.

Any help appreciated

Phil

According to Allan Staniforth 'Taper reamer (BMC suspension ends) similar Ford track rod ends and No.2 plumber's reamer. Not a standard taper but approximately 1 in 8.5 (6.8 degrees) included angle or 1.42 inch per foot'

Many thanks for that so far I have been doing some drawings on CAD and got 7 degrees, so 6.8 could well be right.

Really Appreciated.

Your best bet is to measure the male taper on the ball joint, and work it out as a taper ratio, then go from there.

Or as you are making them yourself, can't you put the ball joint in a lathe with a fixed centre supporting it. Clock along the back of the taper, and rotate the compound until it zeros, lock it all up, then you can bore out the ball joint sockets on the lathe, and it should be bang on the correct angle.

They are actually 7.25 Degrees. Standard Reamers and even Cutters for Milling Machines are available.

I think I did check for that, however no. Morse Taper isn't a 'standard' Taper across all sizes, the angle varies with the different sizes!  (bangs head in to wall)

When I looked in to it a few months back, I seem to recall that this is in fact how the original Taper Angle was derived way back when, though it seems since about the 60's it was referred to as an angle, and since that time, I doubt many places where you'd buy such an animal would know what you were on about!

I can see what you mean, and as you said they seem to all be rated by the angle now.

I have found a 1.5" per foot reamer and I belive it works out at 7.15 degrees.

Your opinion would be appreciated?

Many of the guys I've spoken with have used 7.0, through to 7.5 degrees and say they've not had problems. The Taper Pins are mildly hard and the arms, by comparison, soft, so I see how they get away with the differences. I don't see that you've have any issues with that one. Do a trial in some wast material, even some Aluminium, and just hand fit a pin to it and see how it feels. If you have some engineer's blue, check it with that. I doubt you'll have an issue.

Many thanks for your help and advice, genuingly appreciated.

I will get the 1.5in per foot and take it from there, if it works I can then make some spares easily.

Hopefully another problem solved on a very complicated build but will hopefully get there in the end..

Cheers

Phil
