Hi, I have a Kangoo 1.5dci 04 plate and recently the little digital screen has been flashing 'OIL'. I check the oil all the time and it has the correct amount. The other day (sunday) I drove the van on the motorway for around 5 miles, when I came off at my turning I was sat at idle and there was a very loud grinding sound coming from the engine. When I revved, the grinding noise would disappear.

I decided to pull up at halfords (closest place) and check the oil, it read empty??? So nipped in and had my pants pulled down and my a*se raped for 2 litres of oil, of which I added half. Drove home and the engine just got louder and louder!

Tried the van tonight, started at the turn of the key, but the engine started smoking straight away and was very loud! very rough noise!

I'm persuming the engine is shot and I'll be ringing a scrappers in the morning?

gawd knows.

i have the 1.9dci in my scenic and i bought it with a fudged piston and broken turbo for peanuts.

That sounded like a gattling gun and smoked like anything when it was running.

I ended up fitting a good second hand engine to it and it's now good as gold

I got rid of my issued infested 1.6 auto scenic and got the next shape up 1.5dci manual scenic thinking it was just a renault auto petrol thing

Turns out it was also a renault diesel manual thing!

I was expecting the usual electrical gremlins etc but when you add random stall issues and fuel issues it gets a bit much, I know it doesn't help you much (well none basically!) but I've had enough of them, was told at the time the renault diesel engines were supplied to nissan from 2000 onwards and look how good they are...they still have issues

On a plus side there was a 2000 plus diesel nissan car near me going massively cheap as it had a known fault, I say known as it was known to me! So I bought it and fixed it for free and sold next couple of days for double the price - god bless renault

Bin it, and I mean the van!

I think that's the best option Kam! I'm currently in the process of putting an offer in for a house so money is tight at the moment, so don't want to be throwing any at the van, just not worth it when you consider it'll only be worth about £1200 in working order. Ah well will just have to bite the bullet on this one.

They're putting the 1.9's in Suzuki Vitara's. My sister bought one and the only problems she's had with the whole car is the engine. Just stupid little things but annoying anyway.

1.5s (k9k) are far better than the 1.9s (F9Q).
There are currently 7 different types of the K9K engine in Renaults. Step 1,2,3....7 all with different injecton and engine set ups ie FAP etc arrangements. Some are better than others granted but there's more good ones out there than bad. Also any engine with any manfacture is easy to say is crap. It's a mechanical component which means it's going to wear with millage. All the K9Ks need is a good oil change once a year so things like the turbo oil return doesn't block up with thick oil causing the turbo to over heat and fail As an example. Look after tgem and 90% of the time there good to you.
Kicking out 110bhp depending on spec and on a good long run up to 75mpg with nipping around town at 50s mpg makes it a good engine in my eyes

My replacement F9Q is going strong. The person i bought the engine off is a Renault mechanic and he says that the F9Q will give no trouble if you change the oil regularly.

He had been changing it every 3000 miles when he had it in his car using genuine Renault Oil and Filter and suggested i do the same.

Might seem a bit overkill to do it that often but id rather spend £35 on oil every 3000 miles than risk having the engine go bang again.

The F9Qs are also good. Just a much older engine and a little heavier on fuel than the newer K9Ks but if looked after service wise there like you say there go forever.
3000 is low. That's about 1 months driving for me but just depends how much you drive it.
I do my cars when they hit there service time ( I do about 50k a year on one of my cars) or once a year in my other renaults. Does me ok.
