Hi,

I'm not sure what I have done wrong but I'm getting confused with TDC on no.1.

How I thought it should be -

When the crank's keyway is at 12 O'Clock and it's mark is lined up with the mark on the Cam's gear with it's keyway at 2 O'Clock then piston no.1 should be at it's highest point and the rockers on cylinder no.1 should be loose and also cylinder no.4's rockers should be under pressure and about to rock between opening and closing of the valves.

Cylinder no.1 is radiator end and no.4 is clutch end.

But how mine is - Please have a look at the attached Video. -

As you can see from the attached video when my markers are lined up the rockers on no.1 cylinder are under pressure and no.4's cylinders are loose....

If I try to achieve the rocker positions how the Haynes suggests in having the rockers on no.1 loose and the rockers on no.4 under pressure and about to swap between opening and closing of the valves my crank mark would be correct but my cam's mark is 180 degrees out.

Am I reading the manual correctly?

If I'm wrong how do I put it right?

Thanks

Your thinking is logical and what one would normally expect, however a quirk of these engines is that when the dots are lined up, No. 4 is actually at TDC,,,,

You are reading it right.

There is nothing wrong.

I guess it must have been designed by a Government Committee.

The guidance in Haynes is wrong. Setting up TDC as it says and then re-fitting a new timing chain with the cam and crank shaft sproket timing dots as shown in the manual causes the keyways to be in the wrong position relating to the cam and crank woodruf keys.

Sketch 7.20 in Section 2B.6 is incorrect.
