that gearbox looks ace! One tip I would suggest is to pop the bolt for the gearstick steady bar in now. I forgot to do mine when it was off the car and had to take the exhaust off to give me enough clearance to slide it in!

Thanks, the bolt is still on the 998 in the car atm, but I've not had any problem with that before - maybe a different exhaust?

A plan for a roadtrip has been suggested by a friend: through France (& Switzerland?) to Italy, down the East coast to Ancona where we will take the overnight ferry to Greece, stay a while, then back up through the Balkans, Austria, Germany and home. I feel a roofrack would be useful for a trip of this length and MrBridgers seems the obvious choice of supplier but for my taste their Original Monte is a little small and the Monte Max a little large. I've been in touch and asked for a custom one which splits the difference at around 600mm long which they've kindly agreed to make for me.

After a fair bit of head scratching i've worked out where all the parts go and re-assembled these big boys with service kits. Just need some new studs to bolt them to the manifold and some HS4 backplates for my K&N cones to finish.

They look really nice now! Is there much left to do on the engine now?

Not too much - I need to get the 998 out of the car and swap some of the common parts over to the 'new' one (flywheel, starter, alternator etc) then once the fried wiring is replaced  it can go in.

Four new studs arrived in the post so I tried fitting the carbs to the manifold only to find that the holes for two of the studs had been drilled at an angle and one of those was out of position which means the connection rods don't line up!

I suppose I'll have to have the holes welded up and re-drilled at the right angle and in the right position. never straightforward is it?!!!

If theres enough material around the hole, you could get a machine shop to fit a hell-coil or make a bit with thread on the outside and inside to screw in.

Yes, I have used helicoils before - one of the holes probably could be saved using that but the one in the wrong place is too far out so I might as well get them both done properly while I'm at it.

Manifold drilled and tapped, new studs shortened and threads cut further down them. I now need to cut the HS2 linkage bars down to fit between these bigger carbs.

Looking good there! Are you planning on using the PCV on the manifold or the CCV ports on the carbs?

On my HS2s I used the ports on the carbs so I guess I'll do the same.

Ok that’s good, I always found that was the easiest way to do it.
