Inlet manifold and carb, brake servo and master, air horn compressor fitted - had to shorten the carb mounting studs as the new manifold projects further so had to remove the spacer block to fit the air filter in. Can't get oil pressure on the starter so will need to prime the oil pump and bleed the brakes. Exhaust to be re-fitted then nearly there!

Thanks, it's only temporary (I hope!) while I investigate the new engine's problems, but I couldn't bring myself to re-fit the original 998 without a tidy-up and some attempt to lessen the oil seepage.

After priming the oil pump through the banjo with a squirty oil can I was able to get good oil pressure, then fitted the exhaust. Needed to swap the HT lead positions to get it to start, now on the button although getting a clatter on revving that I now need to track down - what is it with these engines - why can't they just run nicely?

Seems Ok now thankfully, so I'll bleed the brakes, fit the bonnet and we're done! Any car shows around Dorset? The only one I know of is a regular one at Dinnington, Near Crewkerne, Somerset on the first Wednesday of next month.

Yes - not sure whether to start taking the new engine apart now or leave it as a project in case we get locked down again this winter!

The throttle response has been jerky (and annoying) so today I oiled the accelerator mounting bracket and took the cable out to grease it. That all went well and seems to have solved the issue, but as I was putting the cable back I knocked the clip that locks the cable to it's socket on the return spring plate off the airbox where I'd stupidly left it. Sods law dictated that it fell into the engine bay but didn't re-appear beneath. I couldn't see it anywhere so I tried driving over bits of 5 x 2 hoping to dislodge it without success. Eventually I jacked the car up and using a piece of electrical cable located it tucked behind the steering rack. A magnet finally liberated it, a quick job having successfully been turned into a Covid timewaster!

My Smiths 1410 RVC tacho packed up a while ago - it went straight to max revs as soon as the ignition was turned on, so I ordered a RVI to RVC conversion kit from Spiyda to repair it. Unfortunately the circuit board is far too big, Spiyda have offered to exchange it for a remote board in a box that you fix behind the dash so I'll go for that.
This afternoon I decided to Vizard my carb - the piston doesn't need chamfering as it clears the chamber so I concentrated on the throttle butterfly spindle. I cut the upper half off, filed the lower half a little thinner and cut the screws down, countersinking the butterfly so they sit flush(ish).
Then I ground the lower rim of the intake elbow to a smooth shape to improve airflow.
I managed to drop one of the carb mounting nuts into the engine bay which as usual didn't re-appear below, but I was able to find it on the road outside my house when I got back from my test run.

The car was suffering from a slight lag on initial acceleration so I decided to try 20/50 in the dashpot to give it a bit of a boost - however whether as a consequence of this, or something coincidental, it now runs terribly with no power other than at idle. I swapped back to the 10/30 I'd been using previously (via a try with, even lighter, transmission oil) without benefit. I've wound the jet right out because giving it choke seemed to resuscitate it but it seems to want more fuel so I've ordered an AAA needle.

More tinkering uncovered that it needed more timing advance - it's running well now so I may take it to a classic car evening at the Virginia Ash pub in Henstridge, Somerset tomorrow evening.
