I've removed the clutch - (came off relatively easily), stripped the old paint from the timing backplate and waterpump pulley and cleaned and given a bit of a polish to the waterpump and thermostat cover. I cut the little square tube thing off the timing cover and knocked out the dimple while I was at it in case I want to go duplex in the future. The clutch case oil seal was on the way out judging by the amount of oil in the case. I've checked the oil pump - no discernable wear so I'll re-use it.
I'll replace the bearings in the clutch case while they're accessible and check the diff for wear - I've already got a new uprated pin that I bought before I realised that the wear on the 1275 diff made it cheaper to go with the x pin version on that.

Today I removed the 1st motion? bearing race from the clutch housing. I can't for the life of me remember how I did it on the new engine when I replaced that one but this time I welded around the inside of the race then inserted the biggest blind bearing puller I've got (which isn't big enough), jamming it in place on one side with a sliver of metal to enable it to pull out the loosened race.

I've sprayed the fan pulley and after numerous coats of high-build primer and much sanding back the timing cover is ready for topcoat. I now need to strip the block of peeling paint and to do that I need to block up all the holes/open areas to stop muck entering the engine. I thought the most secure way of doing this would be to fit all the senders, plates, banjos etc and tape them so I don't damage them with the wire wheels so I am now waiting for my delivery from 'Spares (which seems to be taking quite a while to arrive) but should be here tomorrow.

Thought I'd check the diff pin today so removed the diff and found that it was starting to be worn away on one side - not as badly as the one that came out of the 1275 when I first got it (with the oil grooves)

Finished rubbing down the block and head and gave it a coat of paint. Fitted the diff and started bolting the various bits and bobs back on. Tomorrow I'll take the lighter flywheel off the new engine and fit it on this one - might as well get some use out of it! I'd like to get the 998 finished tomorrow and fitted on Wednesday if all goes well as there's a car show at a pub in Somerset I go to that's re-opening on wednesday.

had a very enjoyable day putting the 998 back together in (mostly) sunshine - everything went well, the clutch popped off the 1275 after a few turns of the screw and is now on installed. I've only got the timing cover to put on - that's drying after another coat of paint, and I planned to get the engine in tomorrow morning and have the car ready for the pub show in the evening. Or so I thought! I decided to offer up the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold/carb for a photo and that's when I found a problem. A combination of the fatter central branch of the exhaust and the bulbous inlet manifold cut from the cast iron standard one meant that the two aren't compatible. And not just by a little wafer thin margin either - its a good 10mm out - I did measure the wall thickness of the inlet in case it was thick enough to be able to grind off but there was only 3mm there. I tried grinding some of it off and then beating a depression with a hammer but still way out so I'll need a new inlet manifold that will clear.
Looks like I won't be taking the car to the show after all - still, it's pushed me on and I'll be able to put the engine back in while I find out what inlet to order.

Hopefully you'll put the fan on the right way when you fit the timing cover.

That's one fat centre branch!
Hopefully you'll put the fan on the right way when you fit the timing cover.
Ahh yes- well done for spotting my deliberate mistake!
