So I got the engine back in without too much hassle - the usual pain to get the engine mounts to subframe bolts in but done. Whilst fiddling around with the fan belt however I notice that the timing plate? on the crank damper has come away somehow and is rattling around between the damper and timing cover. This means the engine will have to come out again. Aaaaargh!

Hi John,
Do you know what the purpose of this ring is?
Cheers,
Christian

Yes, nearly: - I re-fitted the exhaust today and ordered a Bosch blue coil. This is the coil recommended by 123 for use with my dizzy, so should eliminate the coil as the cause of the motor cutting-out at higher revs.
Now I need to fit the carbs, bleed the brakes and cross my fingers!

Frustrating day today - I bolted the carbs on, unbolted them because I'd put the throttle quadrant the wrong way up, bolted them back on, tried to fit the 2nd head-steady to find that the carbs heatshield stops access to the exhaust manifold stud that is one of the steady's mounting points so will need to take them off again. Then I couldn't find one of the heady steady rubbers that I had earlier so commenced a search of the garage to no avail. Went back to have another go at the stud and dropped it into the engine bay. It didn't reappear underneath so jacked the car up to have a good poke around - no sign of it. Eventually I found the stud hiding behind the lost steady rubber on top of the subframe. the stud had jammed itself between the subframe tower and the body and took the best part of half an hour to recover, at which point I gave up!
