Oil Pressure Too High?

Best Answer Cooperman , 05 April 2015 - 08:59 PM

Cold at initial start up should be up to around 90 psi with fresh oil and choke on.

Once warm the pressure will depend on the revs, as always, but as a guide a good engine will give around 60 to 70 psi at over 4000 rpm, 50+ at 3000 rpm and 20 to 25 psi at tick-over of around 1000 rpm.

Those are just general figures and a bit either way is not a problem.

Hi guys,

Had the oil pressure gauge reading over 100 psi yesterday when checking for oil pressure and I've been advised it's too high.

Should I be worried? I'm using 20/50 Comma Sonic and the oil was cold as I the engine wasn't running, I was just checking for oil pressure. I'm just concerned that if it's like that at cranking speed, what's it going to be like at 1500 - 2000 rpm for the initial run in?

What do you suggest? Adjustable valve? (Which I might have a go at making).

I've got a brand new spring and ball in at the moment.

Also what pressure should I be looking at ideally?

Thanks,
Ian

When using the ball bearing and spring instead of the standard plunger you need to trim the spring to get the oil pressure down.

I cannot remember the actual procedure that is detailed on here but I believe trimming a half coil at a time till the oil pressure at idle and cold is around 60psi, but double check before doing anything!

Looks like you need to trim the spring a bit to lower it

Mines at 45psi at idle

Mines a turboed engine but should make any difference

I know people who have as low as 25 psi and as high as 100psi

But your just gonna increase wear at those pressures

My engine (1993 built, 1275, NA with stage one kit) is 60 psi running under load(hot or cold)

40 psi at idle(hot)

Fit a plunger type relief valve & spring. The ball type has been known to cause all sorts of pressure issues including too high at cold and fluctuating at medium revs.

I was just about to say the same thing.

Cheers guys!

I'll swap it back to the plunger / thimble one I took out.

I might have a go at making an adjustable regulator out of the existing gallery plug.

What should the ideal pressure be though with cold and warm oil?

Cheers again,
Ian
