The quicksilver and GTI was a boy-racers best friend at one point.
cheap insurance and not bad performance access for a young driver. - Just look at signs off boy racing.. Scraping marks on the Chassis.. ask for regular service papers or Evidence off General maintenance around the car!
But overall The 106/Saxo's are solid car

Inner Rear arches usually rust near where back bumper dirt guards attach, you can see this from inside the boot if you peel the carpet.

They rust on the leading edge of the inside of the bonnet, the slam panel and the wheel arch tubs.
The top mounts on the front suspension goes and they knock. These can sometimes be sorted by tightening the big brass collar under the dust boot on the strut.
Try to go for one that has factory type suspension or if it has been lowered, check it has been done properly with uprated parts.
Other than that, just typical things that you would check for on any car.
Overall they are simple cars, parts are cheap and plentiful and they are quite fun. You can't really go wrong

My sister has a 206 with the 1.4 engine and its on around 115k. I used it a few weeks back and it was a nice little engine. Was surpised how well it went to be honest right up to the red line through the gears. If you can afford to i would go for the 1.4 over 1.1.
Definitely aiming for the Quiksilver over the Zest or Independence, the one with the 1.4

I would also be wary of lowered ones as the rear beam axle don't take well if not done correct

I have had a 306 and a Xsara with the 1.4 engine in and i found them both to be very reliable.
I have just sold my old 106 Zest which had the 1.1 and that was also great. Never been let down by any of them.

I ran a 106 diesel for 12 months and it was one of the cheapest / lowest maintenance cars i've ever had. I think I only ever lifted the bonnet to put screen wash in.
The only thing I didn't get on with was the pedals being bit canted over to the left in the footwell used to make it a bit uncomfortable to drive over long distances.
i reckon the series 1 Rallye models are a classic of the future as well.

I found the pedals were to close together for my big feet. I had to go and buy a slim pair of shoes as my trainers made it impossible to drive comfortably.
I agree about the low maintanance thing. I only ever lifted my bonnet to add screenwash too!

The 1100 is surprisingly quick and does about 50 mpg on a run.
Mines got a bit of rust in the box sectios running fore to aft under the boot floor either side of the spare.
the suspension tower seems to be starting to corrode near where the shock bolts in at the top.
Jack the back up and check for movement in rear wheels (hands at 6&12 o'clock) apparently bearing wear in rear axle is common.
They are good little cars. I bought mine as a disposable daily. Just had mot. Needed new cat as emissions failed but parts are dirt cheap.
