I own a '68 Mini Traveller with an SU fuel pump mounted on the rear subframe. The current pump may be original to the car, and it had intermittent problems which left me stranded twice last fall. It didn't seem worth re-building the old pump when I compared the cost of the parts to that of a new pump.

I bought a new SU pump (part number is AUF214) which is a replacement for the original:

The new pump has two vent pipes on the front and rear of the black body. What type of tubing should I use for vent hose, and where should a route the hoses in a Traveller? The installation instructions state "the vents should be piped to a region of dry air e.g. car interior or luggade compartment."

It is logical to run vent hoses to the spare tire compartment, but I can't find any existing openings. The old pump did not have vent hoses attached.

Thanks in advance,

David Schwartz

Here the TB from 1964 that shows the modification of adding a breather. I'm not sure about the UK, however here most of our Cooper S's and all our Clubman GT's (which where mechanically same as a Cooper S) had these factory fitted;-

The fitting 13H1640 is well and truely NLA, so I wouldn't waste time looking for one. I may have a photo of one somewhere. These were made in white nylon and look similar to a scrivet. The Tubing that was used was a clear plastic tube. Under all normal conditions, they didn't vent fuel fumes at all, they only vented the air space on the other side of the diaphragm from the fuel.

Wow! Thanks for posting such detailed information. The vent diameter is quite small. I have some clear plastic (polyethylene?) tubing used to connect fish tank pumps and filters. This will work assuming fuel fumes don't dissolve it over time.

Thank you,
