Meet "ERL"
Rover Mini City 1990, 998cc A+, 93k*
MOT Until august 25th 2015, New Rear Subframe in 2013.
Erl has been a member of my family for about 5 years now and he has been my pride and joy since I bought him. He gets a lot of attention when out and about and quite rightfully so. Only selling because a recent house purchase combined with wedding means money is tight. Plus I just don't have the time to spend enjoying him that I would like so have decided to put him up for sale to a new loving home.
Background
I bought him as a bit of a project car and have worked hard on him in the past 4 years. He came to me in a bit of a sorry state mid resto with dodgy paint work and looking generally un loved. I have spent about 2 grand on him getting him to look the way he does now. He is a solid runner and never misses a beat, Starts well and then will quite happily take you on many adventures. I currently live in Dorset, Bought him from Glastonbury and he has taken me from tenby in west wales right down to Newquay in Cornwall. Never let me down and I know that if my other car broke down tomorrow I could rely on him as a daily drive quite happily. He regularly makes trips to wales to visit friends and family. I am a keen mini enthusiast and am proud of my mini.
Vital information
Engine & Drive
The engine is the original 998cc A+ from 1990. Runs well. Gearbox also original 4 speed and smooth. Clutch is perfect.
Stage 1 kit fitted with HS4 carb and uprated exhaust with a lovely tone.
Has 93000 miles on the clock however the engine has done about 8K less than this as the clocks have been changed in the past. (original clocks included with the sale) I have a large box of receipts and history for you to look through.
Recently Serviced with fresh oil and greased all round. Since owning I have put brand new distributor (with electronic ignition) on with new HT leads and Coil with timing done recently and plugs changed about 1000 miles ago. The tachometer despite being fitted has never actually worked it looks nice but I've never managed to hook it up properly (somebody with more time than me could probably do this easily!)
I would quite happily get in him tomorrow and drive him to Scotland!
Running gear
In the past 4 years I have given the running gear of the car a complete overhaul.
Front suspension (on both sides ofcourse) has been taken apart brand new rubber cones (doughnuts) from mini spares installed with adjustable HILO's fitted. Any damaged components were replaced including needle bearings on the upper suspension arms and then new ball joints. New gas dampers and snazzy orange bump stops fitted on the front too.
Rear Suspension: BRAND NEW POWDER COATED REAR SUBFRAME from mini spares fitted in 2013. The old sub-frame was knackered and so were the mounting points. I cut out any rust and replaced with good metal. Welded in new sub-frame mounts to the heel board (yes this was a difficult job) and then completely under-sealed behind the sub-frame (with under body sealant pre treated with Waxoil) before fitting the new Subby. When the new subby was fitted I overhauled all of the components including suspension arms giving them a lick of nice red hammerite. another two BRAND NEW suspension cones and again adjustable Hilo suspension on the back
I also cut out any rust patches in the boot area (which were small) and replaced again with good metal. The dampers on the back are good but could do with replacing I did buy new ones when I did the sub frame (included in the sale) but they were rubbish so went back to the older ones I was using before. Which work well but just don't look as nice.
Brakes
Standard brakes with new cylinders and pads on the rear, front brakes got plenty of wear in them yet. Brake components cleaned and overhauled all replaced when doing the rear sub-frame as you would expect. Brand new handbrake cables and components done at the same time.
Tyres and Wheels.
Wheels are classic 4 spoke revolution alloys with 4 good tyres two fronts about 6mm tread two rears about 5mm.
Body work
The body work is in excellent condition. No major rust. Front end panels replaced in about 2008 before I had the car, this included the windscreen scuttle so there are no nasty holes there! Door panels and doors are excellent with no rust. Boot lid replaced in 2011. The A panels were also replaced with the front end.
Sills have had work in the past and are good.
The bonnet is a removable white fibre glass bonnet which makes for much easier tinkering on the engine. Held down with locking bonnet pins and retro leather bonnet straps. The boot lid is sprayed white which matches the roof and bonnet. Looks excellent!
Four spot lamps on the front at the moment but am planning on selling the car with the two outer ones which are wipac and are wired up to work. The inner two are just for show and are lucas lamps that belonged to my now dead grand father. (If you want the two Lucas spots I will want £100 extra as these are sentimental and I would only let them stay on ERL because they look awesome)
Paint work is a little patchy and the front end is a ever so slightly different shade of green to the back end. I sprayed the front end myself and found it impossible to get a good match. When I first got him the front had been left in horrible grey primer after the front panels were replaced. Couple of tiny rust bubbles poking through. Nothing major. If I was going to keep him for a long time I would probably take the stickers off rub down the paint and get the green blown over by a professional. The roof is mint condition and bright white.
Lots of waxoil done in the necessary places (doors sills etc) to keep off the rust. Stickers are a personal choice and easily removed.
Interior
Lots of money spent here too! Excellent condition lovely red vinyl seats with black and red vinyl door cards. Lots of chrome. 8 ball gear knob. Dash has working Oil pressure & voltage gauges. Carpets good condition, Good set of fitted mats included.
JVC CD stereo 6X9 in parcel shelf and two 5 inch speakers in rear pockets. Loud and good bass.
Other important points
This is not a quick car. It looks awesome and drives well pulls nicely through the gears. It will get you about in style. Does about 35-40mpg. I never really take him over 55mph because its just not comfy in a mini. He does shake a little at high speeds and pull to the left slightly. If I were driving him all the time I'd probably pay to get his alignment and balancing done properly.
Just look at the photo's and please ask me any questions you want. I have too many photos to put up and to really appreciate him you have to see him. I am an honest seller that just doesn't have time. If he doesn't sell I will just use him as a daily runner all summer. Buy it now you ask? come see me for a serious chat.
I have a lot of receipts and photos of the work done which I will pull together onto a disk for the buyer.
Cash on collection please or direct bank transfer at time of purchase.
Call for info on 07809436451. I am a teacher so off from the end of the week to take calls. Car is located at dt1 Dorchester.
