Mg Metro Engine Tuning

If there is an engine number available (12H) put it up on here and it should be able to work out year etc.

engine number 12h996aa 138659

 

MG Metro 1300 leaded fuel pre 1989 1275cc 12H996AA - So if the head is original it'll have the 35.6mm inlet valves and higher CR. If you want to run unleaded juice you may need hardened exhaust seats. Or go for a petrol additive if you don't do much mileage.

 

cheers ,would it be fine with the additive or is it better just to do the seats ?

12H996AA is the first generation MG Metro engine (mk1) so seriously early in production... Circa 1982-4

thanks ..i had a feeling it was an early one ..hopefully everthing will be fine after the rebuild.

I'd not spend money on 1.5 rockers there are better ways to spend money on that  spec of engine, and for the little small amount of bhp it gives at the top end, on a road car torques is more important, if your cam is worn, the Kent 266 is the modern day version

As you say the MG Metro cams and the MD266 are very similar in both timing and lift.

 

My experience with the MD266 in a fast road 1293 has been that fitting higher lift rockers (about 1.35 ratio) gave a very noticeable improvement in mid-range and top-end performance. I think this is because the valve lift on the MD266 and MG Metro cams is low when compared to more 'modern' grinds such as the SW5, which have shorter timing but higher lift.

 

So in terms of £ per bhp fitting higher lift rockers to a tuned MG Metro engine could be well worthwhile. The 1.4 ratio set from Calver would be worth trying.

When you strip the engine, if the valve seats are recessed (sunk into the head), best thing would be to get head inserts.

I'm going to be rebuilding a 1275 A+ from an MG Metro myself, and having it rebored to 1293. My spec list may be able to give you some kind of idea.
