Hi..you need a HIF44 carb but this will not tune your engine alone...........a stage 1 kit would involve a bigger valve head and exhaust...then you could think of a new camshaft...it depends on how much money you want to spend....

An HIF44 on a good alloy inlet manifold.

With regard to other improvements, what is the car to be used for and how much can you afford to spend?

Not sure of budget at the minute ..It would just be used as fast road but wanted to see what my options were whilst the engine was out of the car . what would a full stage 1 involve and what sort of power increase would it achieve ?  i was told these engines already had a good cam or would it be worth changing ?  thanks

When they left the factory they had circa 72hp, however, as the last one was built over 25 years ago, I would not be surprised if that had dropped considerably.

As for getting more horses out of it... until it gets a full rebuild, I'd suggest a good service

It's a classic Mini, so you must mean 'not quite so slow road' ;D .

Fast it's never going to be.

The engine hasnt ran for a while but turns by hand .its definitely getting a rebuild but wondered if it was worth upgrading anything along the way . if i got a hif44 carb and upgraded the exhaust and air filter ,would the next step be a bigger valve head ? if so which head would best suite this engine . sorry about all the questions ha ha  i just want it to be right first time as the whole car is being restored from the ground up  ..cheers

As its the MG Metro spec engine a stage 1 kit is not really designed for that engine, stage one kits are for standrd cars, rebuilt with the current head overhauled and a kent 266 cam a HIF 44 SU with a LCB into a good system, is going to make a quick'ish (by Classic Mini Stds) little Mini, and most of all one with good torque for all road work. This would also make a good Sunday blast in the country engine.

The MG Metro engine already has a "Big valve head" (35.6mm) as standard, High CR (10:4 to 1) and the cam if in good condition is ideal. Make sure the engine is healthy (bore wear etc), rebore to +20 if required, then as people have suggested put an HIF44 on (An original MG Metro) alloy inlet manifold. A decent LCB (Stg 2 Maniflow) + RC40 exhaust, and a set of 1.5 ratio rockers and your little mini will be more than a match for modern traffic. 80 brake isn't unrealistic if set up properly on a RR.

Don't start changing cams etc unless it is damaged or worn out.

ok cheers so the engine just needs a strip down and if the existing internals are all good then it sounds like a pretty good set up anyway without any upgrades ? thats better than i expected.

Just before we all get too excited, what capacity Metro Engine is it? They had 850's, 998, and 1275's.
