I've completed more checks today and have noticed lots of air in the fuel filter. Is this normal? Could it be the fuel pump?

It's normal unless the filter is set up so the exit is right at the top so any air rises to the top and gets out.  Besides which i don't see how air could make it richer.

I was thinking air leak around the fuel pump gasket? I'm clutching at straws to be honest and I am a week away from taking out the engine.
Or even if the head gasket was a poor quality one which going by the gasket number it isn't.
Oh and I've even fitted leaner needles which I had lying around which made zero difference

I have fitted a head gasket set supplied for a morris mini small bore. I'm sure these are the same??? If not...

It definitely isn't a stuck choke 👍

I have decided to remove the head. I have a victor HG arriving tomorrow so I will see if that makes a difference. I didn't notice any damage or any difference regarding the combustion areas or oil coolant holes. Bores look ok but the pistons and valves are cacked in soot! All removed in 40 minutes which is a record for me 😂

It was a refurbished head from a English car specialist.... and is a 12g202 head, I haven't sent off the old one with double springs so if it doesn't resolve I will put single springs on that head and send that one I have on the car now back to them.

Still no luck. I guess it's the carbs or jets. I will try and borrow a carb and eliminate that.
I have tried everything!!

About this stage in the process, you have to ask yourself why you love the mini.  I feel your pain Petey81, but   keep a clear head, be thorough and logical in your thought patterns and with persistence and you will sort it. For me after a long and generally interrupted ( days between efforts) process - I get mixed up and so rely on a whiteboard to cross off the various combinations tried always trying to isolate and change just one variable at a time

Thank you for this.

I took some of my problem solving from work and mapped out everything I've checked changed or need to look at. One thing I haven't checked is the needle orientation in the damper ie not pushed too far in.
