Did you get another go at your roof mate?

Tomorrow and Friday I will. The last coat I did before stripping it had no dry spots so hopefully once the primer is redone and it's all level will get all the coats of black done Friday

Why did you have to strip it mate, just at the bodywork stage myself and its so time consuming.

After I originally had striped the edges back to get rid of paint reaction I built it back up to what I thought was level with the what was left. When I put the black on it ended up with a very visible line in some sections which I just couldn't remove and then the last layer I put on some moisture had gotten into the gun from the line and left lots of little pin holes so though o would just start again. I've got plenty of paint so why not lol. Still have both doors and boot to strip and then a bit of prep on the bonnet

Sounds like it's being a pain in the arse painting mate, I'd have spat the dummy out by now. I'm sure you'll get it sorted

Sorry to hear that mate it's pretty frustrating, I used cheap etch on my project and it never took so had to strip it all again.

Nice work this has come on really well, bet its nice to be at the paint stage now, cant wait to be at that stage myself. Top work bud :)

It is good to be at paint stage but also just as hard work. So far I've striped the roof twice but at least this time i know 1 how much paint to mix for each coat and I know that the painting of the bonnet doors and rest of the body will be easier. I think the roof is just awkward because it's so big. It's mainly the middle of it that's the annoying bit.

Yeah i understand what you mean i am going to have a crack at painting my whole car when she is doing on the metalwork and prep side of things can see that beening done in a few places again etc.

I cheated when I painted the roof on my mk1 and did it whilst car was on the spit so I could have it vertical, less dust settlement and easier to control the overlap

That is definitely cheating. I have considered putting it partly on its side but I will carry on. Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow as long a rubbing it down after work tonight doesn't take forever. Actually going to guide coat it this time

Overlap is awkward to get right and roof is hard because you have to move from one side to the other, another mistake I made early on was starting to paint on the panel so ended up with dry spots on the edges, changed technique to starting half a fan width off the panel then next pass on the panel and I got correct overlap and no more dry edges, are you starting from gutter and working to Middle then going around other side to continue as if you are starting from middle it has more time to dry before you move round, maybe mark the masking near centre of roof then paint up to this then go to other side and start from same place, cellulose is probably harder as it dries very quickly and being satin you can't flat any faults out.
Also remember to keep gun parallel to the panel so the fan goes on even. It's easy to angle the gun on centre of roof which would also cause the problem.

When I started it the first time I wasn't the car was up to high and standing on small steps which meant i couldn't move easily. Dropped it down so It's low enough for me to do it standing on the floor and last coat I did was a lot better. The primer this time had about 3 small dry spots.

I was having to over reach at first but it's a lot better now. The way I have been painting the roof is. In the gutters all around then go back to where I started and move the paint up a couple of passes all around and then push the paint to the centre of the roof and then catch the edge before it starts to dry

Got three coats of black on today no dry spots and one run but that was my fault. there is a bit of trash in it. Going to let it dry while I'm at work then will use some 1200 to give it a quick rub down and on Sunday will get two more coats on but will do them with more thinners to paint probably a 60/40 and then a final coat of 70/30

So got the roof all rubbed down as required and got rid of the run.

Then after a day I got three final coats on. One final 50/50 and two 70/30

AA24803F-4955-4BE5-9F42-EE95D6C4376A_zps

This is after it had dried still abit of shine and reflection but not a lot. I've got one bit of rubish in the paint I wish I didn't but will deal with it unless it really gets on my nerves but I will just have to rub it out and put the smallest spot of paint on.

My dad had a template of a mini so printed it out so I could decide wether or not to put the checks back on the roof and thinking it looks good. Definitely was putting them back on the bonnet but in black. My dad has some vinyl samples and one of them is nimbus grey and very close to the hurricane grey so thinking I will get some of that get my dad to cut it out on his vinyl cutter.

Think it will look good and keep to the fact that it's a check mate
