Hi all, My 75' Mini 1000 has an annoying timing chain rattle which will be getting sorted soon! But have a few questions..

 

With it being 75' It will have no tensioner, to convert this to an A+ Simplex set up with tensioner pad do I need the timing cover AND back plate from an A+?

 

Or do people recommend converting to duplex?

 

It is not heavily modified, upon sorting the chain it will just be a 998 with the usual, air filter mod, exhaust system and custom needle.

Just replace it as original and it will be fine. That's the easiest way to do it. the tensioner is a rubber surround ring on the big sprocket, so just change that as well.

And this is the tensioner:  8G549 (2 off required)

You don't need the race-quality chain for a road going 998, unless you are feeling rich this week.

Well, in my books, a new chain means new spockets too. As the chain wears / stretches, it in turn wears the teeth on the sprockets, so even just fitting a new chain on it's own won't last too long.

 

So, when looking at prices between simplex and duplex sets up, since sprockets and chain would normally be changed out, there's very little between them. I nearly always fit duplex, they last so much longer than simplex stuff.

 

The only time I have fit simplex is on higher end race engines, even then, the chain and sprockets were changed out between meetings.

Anyhow iwis chains are very good, the cheap ones on the market just stretch when you're timing the cam in which is something unbearable

Thats a good point! So am i better to get a decent simplex chain, 2 sprockets and the tensioners or a duplex kit?

Been there. My approach would be a single Iwis chain from Keith Calver. If you go A+ sprockets and tensioner, Keith Calver's fitting instructions to me were to make sure that the tensioner just bears against the chain, it doesn't need loading.

The Iwis chain is a seriously engineered product and I wouldn't consider a 'cheap' duplex as an alternative.

From my past experience with an MG1100 engine, the cheap 'no name' duplex chain fared not much better than a cheap simplex and that was with the standard camshaft...

Duplex, even with a lesser quality chain will give better life than a Simplex.

I used to run a '76 mini clubman, 998cc, and that always had timing chain rattle. Was louder if the air vent on passenger side was open...

 

Also I think some of the 998 engines around this time dropped the rubber tensioning rings, and just had a lighter weight single sprocket and no form of chain tensioner fitted.

I hate the sound of the chain rattling. All of my A+ engines dont rattle so the set up seems ideal! This pre a+ engine in my 75' mk3 is on a genuine 59k miles and rattles badly.

Im still in a predicament because ive had every option reccomended in the thread but dont know which to go for
