Paint stripper or wire brush attachment on a drill.

I have been told that paint stripper is no good on this

paint stripper, hamerite is rubbish compared to what it used to be, 9 times out of 10 you would be able to remove it just by shouting at it ;-)

Another vote for heat, although I often use a small blow torch...

But I guess it depends on what exactly it is

I'd be tempted to wire brush (on a drill) it back to bare metal, zinc prime and spray if that is what you're trying to achieve?

i used a wire brush on a drill and that worked a treat for me. i would be weary of warping the metal when using heat, but i guess its just a matter of being careful if you chose that method
