Great build! I am going to start a project fairly soon, I have a few questions and was hoping you could point me in the right direction!
Will a sip mig welder be up for the job on a mini shell? Is it the gas that needs to be consistent as the welder I have has a tiny white bottle, what thickness wire have you used? Also do I spray new old panels with a primer before welding? And ace retain primer after?

What bars do you use to turn the shell over?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Cheers mate!
Your welder should be ok for welding up a mini but a decent size boc/hobby weld bottle of gas will make it a whole lot easier! I use 0.6 wire! All of the black coating on new panels should be removed and replaced with a decent quality weld through primer. You can also give box section panels a coat of brush on paint like zinc 182 on the inside away from areas you are welding to give added protection. After all welding and she'll is painted box sections can be filled inside with wax oil to provent future rot! I turn my shell onto its side by myself as it's quite light! But used paddy hopkirk roof bars when it was completely upside down ! You will need around 4 people to turn it safely

Thanks for the help, I have seen some leave the black coating on, and some paint what looks like a black glossy Hammerite mess underneath panels.

What thickness material do you use? 1mm, I have no idea what people do with underside of wings etc as when I get one I intend to do a underside overhaul to make it completely solid, I'm not sure if this will lead to a complete restoration but I have no experience regarding engines / wiring etc! Or anything yet lol

I Hope you don't mind all the questions

So today I prepped the d/s and rear panel further and gave them a good coat of etch primer. Will be getting the rest of the panels sorted out in the week I hope.

Been prepping the p/s over a few evenings this week. Lucky I put a wire wheel in the drill and wend right in the top corners! Ended up making a hole under the gutter at the back. Welded it up and die grinded it down. Skim of filler and it's sorted!!!

Now this side is basically ready !

Will chuck some etch on it tomorrow evening and crack on with the front end on Sunday!!!

Decided to delete the unused wiper holes tonight!! Much cleaner look without them.
B104FE07-162B-4611-935A-87BCEAB843F8_zps
Gave them a skim of fiberglass

Will rub this down and then skim with filler to finish off :)

Good call on the wiper holes I did the same with mine a while back. Just helps clean the panel up a bit

After a good afternoon of rubbing down and filler work I have got the whole front end in etch primer. First of all tho the wiper hole delete turned out good !

It's a decent primer and rubs down nice too ! I will never use the mipa high build again because it peels off plus it's harder to rub down.

Cheers for the feedback mate I'm trying my best!!! :)
