I'm kinda interested in this thread too, I have a 92 Jap mini which most times, not always, makes a ticking noise like it has a wide valve clearance when you start it cold. Usually takes about 30secs to 1 minute to start, then goes away after about another minute. I have set all the gaps as per Haynes. Occasionally though, it doesn't do it all.  I plan on trying coopermans feeler trick to find out which one it is. Once the car starts to warm up, it stays away completely until it's cold again.

With the rocker cover off and the engine idling, should there be visible oil trickling from anywhere - I don't really understand how this area is fed with oil?

The oil feed is via a hole under one of the posts. Hence the need to place the correct post over this hole. It is also why the shaft locating screw is needed so the oil feed hole in the shaft is in the right place to allow the oil feed in the post to be aligned.

All in Haynes manual.

Thats great, thanks alot. I have run the car with the rocker off before, and there was like a pooling of oil all around the head and the components all looked fairly wetted with oil, but it wasn't like it was spraying out everywhere - I take it that is normal ? Should you be able to see like a little fountain of oil or anything? I just wonder if maybe I have poor oil supply to the rockers.

The oil supply is only really for the shaft bearings. But when running at revs the springs do a fair job of lubing everything else.
