Recently I have rebuild my gearbox. I used a thread lock from Loxeal type 55-03 similar strength as Loctite 243. This instead of locktabs to secure the bolts.  But now I doubt a little bit the threadlock type and strenght is strong enough for usage in the gearbox. Did I used the right type?

Your opinion please,

Thanks

Gijs

I used Loctite 243 which seems fine. I did have to remove a few bolts that were thread locked with this and there was a decent amount of resistance which was reassuring.

Lock tabs are a massively old design. I'd rather use a modern threadlock any day.

If I remember correctly, 243 is the oil resistant version of 242 which is a good choice.  I am sure it will be fine for your application.

The only other Loctite that I would recommend in this or similar applications subject to vibration is Loctite-262.  262 is similar in strength to 242 but behaves differently upon disassembly.  With 242 once you break a fastener "free", it requires less torque to remove... it has a fairly high break away torque and lower running torque.  In contrast, 262 was formulated to have both a high break away torque and high running torque.  This provides a bit more insurance against a bolt vibrating out should it be left a bit loose or otherwise be partially loosened accidentally.

Internal to the gearbox I use Loctite 270, they don't come undone. I use 243 externally on the low torque screws...

I use two types, off hand, I don't recall the numbers, however it's a medium strength one I use on the fasteners where lock tabs once were and a Retaining Grade on the Mainshaft Bearing.

Biggest thing I think is to get all the threads absolutely clean before application. I use General Purpose Paint Thinners for doing that, both Internal and External Threads.

The 270 series is tough stuff indeed!  It is as near to permanent as I ever use.  I would hesitate before using it on fasteners 1/4" and smaller.

Thanks guys, I think I will go for the 270 loctite. I will never forgive myself when a nut ore bolt will come lose because of using threadlock which is not strong enough.
