What Engine Do I Have?

engine

Best Answer Spider , 22 February 2015 - 10:01 PM

Working from the Freeze Plug type, size and number of them the block is a Pre-A+ 1275, no question.

Working from the Thermostat Housing orientation, the Head is also 1275.

There are some obvious differences:

1275's don't have tappet chest covers and the thermostat housing locates at a different angle on the head. Though you could put a 1275 head on a smaller engine.

Different compression ratios were achieved with different piston crowns -  flat or dished...

A and A+ blocks have different fitting for the alternator and distributor....

Pre A+ 1275 engines do have tappet chest covers. I've got one .

Show off  :D

I figured we could eliminate them if he got it as a give away.

Guessworks, how could you tell it was an A+ head from that angle  O_O

From the photo it is a pre-A+ with a Verto clutch. The distributor aperture is large and the block has no external ribs.

Without a photo of the back of the block it is hard to tell whether it is a 998 or 1275. If it has two cam chest covers on the back, each about 4" x 7" with a centre bolt, then it is a 998. If the back of the block is solid it is a 1275 block.

I dont think it can be a Pre A+ because there arent any tappet chest covers

I dont think it is a Pre A+ because there arent any tappet chest covers, and Pre A+ only has one freeze plug above the flywheel housing.

Spider will know better about Oz Minis, but most Pre A+ 1275's don't have tappet covers, even late 1275 Cooper "S"s lost them.

Pre-A+ blocks at 1275 do not have cam chest covers unless they are genuine Cooper 'S' blocks.

Hey??  I'm not sure I'm reading right what your saying here. Most 1275 (not all) don't have tappet covers, only those commonly referred to as 'Cooper S' blocks do.

Also, only 1275 non-Cooper S blocks had 5 Freeze / Welsh plugs, just like the one 87advantage has posted up a photo of (on the previous page) and is asking about.

Ask on that local bad tempered mini forum, Kev the donkey will no doubt set you straight.

Yeap. All our 1275's, both Cooper S and Non-Cooper S Blocks were imported from the UK. As far as what was fitted in to Minis, all our Aust built Cooper Ss and the early Clubman GTs had tappet covers but by Nov 71 (when we first saw them in Minis) they'd all gone solid chest

Opps, sorry, just saw those on the gearbox (case). It's a late Rod shift gearbox, most likely standard ratios, but could have anything, you'd have to split it off the engine to be sure.

Of all the Rod shoft gearboxes, they were the best in most regards.
