Working from the Freeze Plug type, size and number of them the block is a Pre-A+ 1275, no question.
Working from the Thermostat Housing orientation, the Head is also 1275.

There are some obvious differences:
1275's don't have tappet chest covers and the thermostat housing locates at a different angle on the head. Though you could put a 1275 head on a smaller engine.
Different compression ratios were achieved with different piston crowns - flat or dished...
A and A+ blocks have different fitting for the alternator and distributor....

has removed the Engine number plate !
unless he told you he removed it - they do get messed up easily
I've had them rott off / fall off in the past - even thou they are pinned on
in addition to ethels post the a series is a smother cast block - the a+ has a ribbed block
post a pick so we can have a look
Remember red ones are faster

A picture would be good, but without an engine number or paperwork, the only way to find out for sure is to pull it apart.
Basically from a picture you can tell what the basic engine is, A series or A+, Small or Big Bore but that's about it.

From the photo it is a pre-A+ with a Verto clutch. The distributor aperture is large and the block has no external ribs.
Without a photo of the back of the block it is hard to tell whether it is a 998 or 1275. If it has two cam chest covers on the back, each about 4" x 7" with a centre bolt, then it is a 998. If the back of the block is solid it is a 1275 block.

Sorry, didn't realise that the photo was the actual engine.... thought that was just and example photo...
Cooperman, you should know better.... slapped wrist ;)
Two core plugs in the block above the transfer case and it's an A series, it must be a solid wall big bore, other wise it'd have 1 core plug.
It's a right Heinz 57 of an engine... Metro starter motor, A series block, A+ head, Verto clutch
