Hi I have posted about this before,I have a 1995 Cooper Spi.
My temperature gauge doesn't seem to be working I have changed the thermostat as well as the temperature sender and still no joy.
I don't have a clue about wiring so I was after any advice or anything I might have over looked.
Also is it okay to still run the car without the gauge working?
Thanks for any help.

Is the fuel gauge working?  The fuel and temperature gauges use the same power supply from the voltage stabilizer so if the fuel gauge works and has power, the temperature gauge should also have power.

Locate the sending unit wire on the engine.  Turn the ignition to the run position.  Disconnect and hold the terminal on the sending unit end of the wire to a good, bare metal earthing point on the engine.  If the gauge goes to "hot" then the gauge and sending unit wire are OK.  If the gauge does not climb to hot, there is a problem with the gauge or the sending unit wire.

Thanks Doug
Sounds like I have a problem with the wire. Do you know if the wire goes straight from the sender unit to the gauge or does it it go via something.
Thanks Percy.

The Sender Wire does go straight from the Sender back to the gauge.

Actually, very good point. Now I go back and check the year of the car. I don't know. Dan would be the man to ask.

Just to piggyback this - if you short the gauge and it only goes to the half way position, what does that mean?

Matt.

On the SPi it's a similiar set up, temp sensor under the inlet manifold feeds the MEMS ECU then the ECU feeds the gauge.
If the ECU isn't getting a proper reading from the sensor, it won't fuel the car properly (she'll run rich) but it could be just the wiring from the ECU or the gauge.

Having trouble with my temp garage hope someone can help me! It's a mg 1275 engine, I've earthed the sender wire to a metal part on the block and the gauge shoots up so I changed the sender unit hoping this would fix it and still nothing. I've changed the thermostat too as thought the old one might not be opening but that's hasn't changed anything, any advice would be very much appreciated thanks

Just to add the fuel gauge is working fine

You posted to an older thread on this topic.  My post below repeats my reply to you in the older thread.  Any future posts I will make to this thread.

I cannot tell you which sending unit is correct for your engine but there are a couple of different ones available.  Did you buy a replacement that is correct for the gauges in your car?  You should not buy one based on what the engine came out of.

Okay dklawson no problem I posted on the other thread just so more people saw it I'll reply on this thread from now on. The sender is the one that has a single wire coming out of it the same as the one that was in there before hand which was working fine. There isn't a ecu on my car as far as I am aware thanks

That doesn't actually help .. there are different senders which LOOK the same .. you need to buy one that matches your gauge and wiring (stabiliser, etc)

Just sticking a random sender in may not work (and doesn't appear to have!)
