Hi, Im after a good colour(hopefully) wiring diagram for my 72 850 auto.Everthing is disconnected and not labelled, not by me. It has also been converted to alternator, but the control box is still in place, I assume to act as a junction box, don't really know where to start and the Haynes book of lies isn't that good. Any help really appreciated. Mart.

The Haynes wiring diagrammes are not that bad, use in with  the BS-AU7 Wiring Colours and that will tell you exactly what colour goes where, it in the FAQs Electrical section here http://www.theminifo...ng-codecolours/

I'm pretty sure this is the one you're after. This is from the factory data, they didn't do them in colour!

Don't just look at the diagram and panic.  Everything you need to Know is in that chart (apart from how its been converted to alternator running, but that should be straightforward) you just need to learn how to read it.  Every piece of equipment is on there, and on these early BMC ones you can even tell what they are just by looking at it, every joint and splice and every colour.  The joints shown are at roughly the right spacing along the loom too, they just aren't shown physically arranged and laid out as they are in the car.  It's a logical diagram, not a physical one, which is far more useful and exactly what you need.  It shows you what connects to what and each wire can easily be traced.  Also in these BMC ones I personally have yet to find an error, which the later BL / Rover ones are full of.  Take a piece of equipment, look what colour wires it should have, and find a bundle of terminals in roughly the right part of the car that match the colours.  The chart tells you what terminal numbers they go to.  Or do it the other way around, pick a wire and read the colour then work out what its for.  There is no need to label the wires when you strip a wiring loom, the colour coding tells you everything you need to know and is British Standard so once you can read it for one British car it's the same for all of them.  When you look at a wire it will have a main body colour and a stripe of a different colour, they are always listed with the main colour first and the stripe second.  The main body colours group wires into different systems and the stripes identify them individually.  For example white is ignition live, purple is constant live, dark green is accessory live and so on.  The full colour code is listed in our FAQ section to help you.
