You CANNOT spray 2k at home, its a highly toxic paint that requires a fully filtered environment, full air fed mask and paint suit. This is due to the paint being Isocyanate based and any exposure to it (breathing it in, through your eyes/skin) can leave you in a&e, or worse.

But spraying at home with celly is possible and a decent job can be achieved but the key is the prep work, generally speaking its 80% prep, 10% masking and 10% spraying.

Otherwise a bodyshop can quote anything between £1k - £3.5k depending on prep and final finish required, flat colours will be cheaper than metallics and exotic paint jobs.

There are plenty of good filter masks that can be used with two pack. If you make sure it is the correct type and follow insructions you will be OK your paint shop will set you right. Wear a disposable one piece coverall with hood and gloves to minimise skin contact and adequate ventilation and you should be OK. I could never get on with air fed helmets so used twin filter masks for years.

But how would you keep the harmful vapours out of the environment without any air filtration?

Yep a chemical filtered mask will go some way to stopping you breathing it in but you will still risk contact through eyes, skin, etc. Also as mentioned you are polluting your neighbourhood. There is plenty of evidence on the internet of DIY sprayers having issues including one guy that woke up in hospital, he was using a filtered mask but that didn't help in his case.

I am not a chemist but there is a lot more volatile substances in cellulose paint than 2P you can smell it a mile away. 2P uses less thinners and the main pollutant is overspray which does not go far. The main source of pollution for both methods is gun washing unless it can be done with a recovery system.

Personally I would not use either unless I had a reasonable area in which to do it

Hi, thought id ask incase anyone might know :D
I was just wondering if anyone would know roughly how much a full exterior respray would cost, we have fitted all the panels needed and stripped the car, but just want to know how much roughly it would cost for a prep and respray.

Many Thanks

The painting is the easy bit its the prep work that counts , I've sprayed vw campervans on my drive and after a good mop and polish they looked great , it all depends on how far you want to go,as already said have a go just do plenty of homework , you can hire the compressor and spray gun ect , I've sprayed a campervan with a 24 litre compressor just had to wait every now and then for it to build up , cellulose is ok because you can work with it if you make any mistakes , 2 pack is nasty stuff and I would not recommend using it for a home respray it's got nasty chemicals in it , even with cellulose use a mask , as I said do you homework , Shawbags ( Chris ) .

Sorry but i disagree.

It is the isocyanate in 2K paint that is the dangerous part. It can get into your system through your eyes, skin and through breathing it too.

It is very dangerous to the environment and to your health and needs to be sprayed in a contained area with the correct filtration. The sprayer must also wear a spraying suit and have an appropriate air fed mask.

I have read about a new isocyanate free 2k paint but I have no experience with it so cannot comment on it

Please don't suggest people spray 2K at home. It is simply highly unsuitable.

Ben
