Hey up - OK, I'm trying to replace the lock barrel in the bootlid in my little mini and i've managed to remove the lock mechanism etc, but falling at the last hurdle...

I can't get the barrel out to replace it. I haven't got the key from current lock, so i'm turningto the guru's.......

Any advice welcomed.......

Cheers Chris

Seems you've done everything right thus far - the square'ish lug is the actual lever to cause the lock - looks nicely corroded....but I think the lack of key is the  problem... I think your best option is to drill out the lock (use a significantly undersize bit as there's a fair bit of shrouding in the handle) and then extract the old one piece by piece......wont take too long.....

Ok then i'll plug in the drill and get the hammer....I did look at trying to drive the lug out but thought i'd ask before bashing it to death and of course tried lubing it first too...

I take it it does just drive through like the pin?

Cheers for that

Chris

The way I've tended to do it in the past without the key, is you put the handle in a vice wrapped up to protect it and just hammer a screwdriver in to the old lock barrel.

Sometimes the key number is engraved on the boot handle ... you might get lucky.

But no, it won't come out as the key pulls the five small tags in that operate the lock and they are holding it in place now. Take the key out of your new one and you will see what I mean ..

Your boot lock is much later than that on my car but I assume the design is largely the same.  I anticipate you may have the wrong lock barrel.  There are different styles for door locks, ignition locks, and boot locks and those changed a couple of times over the years.

See the Mini Spares kit linked below.

https://www.minispar...px|Back to shop

(if the link fails, go to Mini Spares and search for their part "BARRELSET"

Look at the barrel in the middle of the 3 shown in the product picture.  You will see the middle barrel has an eccentric post at the bottom.  That post should go into the slot of your boot lock's square pin.  When you turn the key, the eccentric pushes the square pin in and out of the handle assembly to lock the boot.

Ah ha - all becomes clear. Yeah you're right I have the wrong barrel. All looks obvious now I've seen the correct part. Cheers for that info, minispares here we come.

Glad you got it fixed

I had a very stiff barrel said the vicar to the actress

and soaked it in vinegar for quite a while then oil and it finally popped out

but I did also have the key

I would add that sometimes soaking in brown or white vinegar can remove enough rust to let bonded parts separate for removal

Your annotations are very good

Your 'incorrect' barrel is an ignition barrel for a Mini with the central ignition switch.
