Hi All,

Anyone know where I can get decent CV Joint Gaiter Clamps/Clips from, the ones that came with my joints are pretty poor. Was thinking of the earlier type (Not sure what they are called) as opposed to the later 'ear' type which will be very close to fouling the hubs the former look a lot lower in profile. . Can't seem to find anywhere that sells the earlier type?

Any help much appreciated

Stuart

I expect Lye will have them http://lyemotorfacto.../contact-us.php

Ear ones worked well enough for me with the proper crimping tool, I just gave them a tap with a hammer to squash them a little, had no clearance issues.

Although it doesn't look nearly as nice, 1 mm Iron Tie Wire is far more effective and reliable. The Concreter's use it to Tie the Reo together. Iron Wire is better than steel tie wire as you can twist it to hell and back and it doesn't break off like steel.

Thanks for the reply's Gents, Ross looks like I will have to bite the bullet and buy the tool to fit the ear type clips. Actually tried to tap the ear flat after first closing the them with a pair of pincers end result was they just sprang off  but I put this down to the poor design of the clip the teeth point away from the boot when installed as opposed to all the others I have seen that point in toward the boot. Hope that makes sense.

Chris have heard of wire being used before and even plastic cable ties though I don't know if either would satisfy the MOT test, will have to make some enquiries, unless someone can confirm this one way or the other.

Yep, I binned the cheap ear clamps that came with the cv's as the teeth didn't look very grippy, and they just weren't very heavy duty. The tool I purchased was only £5 from ebay and did the job just fine. http://www.ebay.co.u...=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Gee, I didn't know the MOT guys got that fussy, but fair enough. If they won't allow wire but will allow 'cable ties', I can highly recommend these in nylon

Instead of the end coming through the tie at 900, them come in the end, so when tight, are flat, no leaks. Also, they have a lower profile, so as they spin, they don't get knocked off on the hub. For the bigger end of the boot, joint two clips together. They do have longer versions available, however, I've found them too wide for CV Boots.

If they don't allow them, then Stainless  Steel Cable Ties are available, though not cheap

I used similar ones for many years, while good, if you don't get them very tight, they do come off easy and they are not easy to get tight.

Pretty sure cable ties are fine for the MOT. I've certainly used them plenty times without issue.

Not aware of cable ties on gaitors and cv boots being a issue if they are secure

There are plenty of boot kits with tie-wraps in the box ... but they generally fall off so I buy the clamp on type separately

+1 to both of Chris' suggestions.

I have used soft iron wire for years with good results.  I cannot imagine that being unacceptable as it is much more secure than nylon cable ties but your MOT rules may say otherwise.  The stainless cable ties may be available in the electrical department of the DIY store... which is where I have bought them before.  I have also found them with the exhaust wrap section of auto parts stores.

I've got quite a few of those ones linked above, happy to send you a pair out. Unfortunately don't have any of the 50mm ones left though!

Nylon cable ties are not recommended for the hub side, they are ok for the drive shaft side.  The length required to go around tends to have a large head, which can foul the hub and push the cv boot off.  You may not notice until your discs are full of grease.

I use a couple passes of lock/safety wire, its nice and secure, sits super flat and is easy to install.
