I was cleaning up my carb the other day and I thought it would look nicer with a cone or pancake filter compared to the standard air box. Obviously k&n would be the best money no object but would the cheaper minisport/ebay style ones have any detrimental performance effects. I know I'd need to get the fueling and possibly the needle changed after but that's not an issue, just wondered if the £10-20 filters were actually ok?

They are ok, but the K&N will last longer. You don.t have to go all out with needle changes either.

My K&N lasted me years, you wash them out and re-oil, simple, the others don't allow oiling, you can wash the sponge but for how long before it disintegrates is any ones guess.

K&N and similar bolt on filters are noisy, though some like sound. I don't see why any cotton gauze (K&N copy) filter couldn't be re oiled with K&N oil.  As to how well they work: who knows, or could identify one an unbranded product from another.

In theory, cotton gauze filters will last a very long time without cleaning. I've only ever had to clean a K&N once because of soot from a manifold leak.

Here is a link to a test on air filters. It suggests a KN filter in the standard box can be better on a standard engine than a cone filter..

KN are more expensive, but if you never have to buy another filter for the life of your car it makes sense in the long run.
