Hi all,
I'm almost ready to swap over my tired 998 with a rather less tired example! It has not been rebuilt although has been partially stripped to be generally checked and to have a few gaskets replaced and looks to be in very good health. I don't know however whether I should change the oil pump while its out. I know some say its a no brainer but I'm not sure. £15 to me seems very cheap for a component that keeps your engine alive and yet the evo version seems like overkill for a standard road engine?

So should I replace and if so will the standard £15 minispares pump be reliable or should I stick to the existing pump?

As it is in bits I would be replacing more than just the pump.

Anything below the head is engine out so why not do it now.

A good rule is to always change the oil pump whenever the engine comes out.

Also always check crankshaft end float which should be 0.002" TO 0.005". Fit oversize thrust bearings to correct this if it is too high.

I'm slightly concerned with the low price of the standard pump especially when compared with the evo pump. Are the £15 pumps actually fit for purpose? My engine is only a road engine but is driven hard and I don't want to risk it by being too tight! Equally though I don't want to waste money if they are ok.

I would be quite happy using a standard oil pump on a 998 road engine rebuild.
