Hi there,

My mates 1997 850cc mini has quite a bad oil leak and it seems to be coming from the timing chain cover, what seal needs replaced here? the covers gasket will need done but is there a seal for round the pully? can someone link me to the seal needed on minispares?

Cheers Angus

Yes there is a seal in the timing cover, select one for your year here http://www.minispare...cover seal.aspx

Look at the pulley on the machined surface that runs inside the seal for damage which could cause a new seal to leak in a short while, it will look like a ring around the shaft where the seal runs

This is the seal for pre 92 cars, http://www.minispare...|Back to search

you have the car listed in post 1 as 1997 which I assume is a mistype as the 850 engine was long gone by then

Not altogther sure what you're asking here, but KernowCooper was saying that the seal can wear a groove in the shaft of the pulley. If it has, you'll want a new pulley too.

You'll also want a gasket to suit the Timing Chain Cover as the seal goes in from the inside.

When fitting it all up again, be sure to centralise the Timing Cover again, to the Pulley. There is a tool available for this (I made one) but can often be done by fitting the Pulley on before tightening all the Timing Cover Bolts.

Also, clean it up and try to figure out exactly it's leaking.

Sorry the photo didn't attach, the seal sits in the timing cover itself doesn't it
