One problem with owning a mini in Japan is they are too big for the "Kei Class" which gives you cheap registration fees and parking. You've got to be dedicated to keep one on the road. The Shaken test each year is also very expensive for old cars...
Yeah, I've noticed they don't have yellow number plates...

I can't be a 98. Its looks like a mk1/2 got external hinges...no spi.looks much older perhaps it assumed a 98 vin?
As I pointed out in my post with the link......If you look very carefully it is not a Mk1/2 Mini, the doors have been converted to take external hinges and the bottom corners of the later internal hinge doors and A panels have been rounded off to look like Mk1/2....even the roof gutters have been retroed. The Japanese are very good at producing convincing retro-styled Mini's with all the details like sliding windows, and on which only Mini 'anoraks' can spot the subtle differences!
Japanese Retro Conversion on 1.3i
Very nice example of a Japanese Retro conversion on a 1998 Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i with air con (Japan never got the MPI front rad).........SU carb, 10" wheels/discs, centre speedo dash, toggle switches, Mk1 indicator/column, wing mirrors, external hinges, door check straps, rounded door corner at "A" panel base, early style full front valance and even sliding windows!
