I have a strange noise as I drive that I suspect is down to my brakes that are binding slightly.

It only happens after I have been driving a few miles, and it car speed related, not engine speed.

The only way I can describe the noise is it sounds like someone using a foot pump to blow up a tyre. The faster I go, the faster it sounds like someone is pumping!

I have jacked up the car and couldn't recreate the noise. The wheels have no play in them and all the rubber parts underneath look good.

I know my brakes bind slightly, and I think (but not certain) that the noise stops as I brake. Could the binding brakes have warped the disc and now the noise is the warped part of the disc catching on something as it turns?

I had a binding rear brake that sounded like a friction sound on the front when driving, I misdiagnosed this as the front brakes and replaced those first only for the problem to persist. I'd check the rears, it's funny how sound travels around a mini.

If the disc is warped you will feel a light thumping through the pedal when you brake hard .

Does it sound like squealing. I had that problem. Turns out the cylinders were leaking fluid onto the shoes.

Worn or loose wheel bearing?  Sometimes this 'shows up' as something as you've descibed from a brake drum or disc, not always easy tp pick once it's jacked up.

If discs or drums are binding you can sometimes tell by the offending corner getting hot after a decent run

I did think that, and the one that seems to bind is the front passenger one, but as that's directly in line with the radiator it gets warm anyway so I cant tell if its the brake making it warm or the rad!

a rubbing sound to start with, like when breaking. It did soon progress to a high pitched squeal though.
