Back on the road for a couple of weeks now and trying to sort problems as they manifest themselves. My latest issue is an intermittent starting problem; the starter motor sometimes whizzes along merrily without actually engaging with the ring gear. I given a gentle tap on the starter casing it'll engage sometimes, other occasions it'll sort itself out; so I don't think I've a tooth/ teeth missing.

I'll whizz it out over the weekend and check it out- my question is- should I just clean and degrease the shaft or is there a proprietary lubricant I should use? I think I used a dry graphite spray when I looked it over; this is clearly not helping!!

over to the audience..........

Dry Graphite is what I use, if thats not sorted it then it may be the bendix is worn causing the sticking, have you washed it off and seen if its showing signs of jamming.

it got a good clean in December before we hit the road. will try again tomorrow.
if it turns out to be bolloxed, is fitting a pre-engaged type an option? I've heard there may be an issue with flywheel teeth being incompatible?
PS Thanks for the response

You have to have the ring gear to go with the Pre-Engaged Starter I'm afraid

An inertia should work well enough, but if you want to go pre engaged you could fit a high torque motor replacement for the inertia, pricier but not so much when compared to fitting a new ring gear as well.

Are you sure it's not a bad battery, any link between not turning over and being driven or weather?

definitely sticking. its had a good clean and been showered in fresh graphite. hopefully that should be it. its heading towards a Basil Fawlty "this is your last chance, I've warned you about this" scenarios. if it does it again ill launch it.

by the way- how much axial float should be in the shaft?

When I started working on cars (50 years ago) I was taught to wash the benbix In paraffin (petrol leaves a residue of the upper cylinder oils) dry it and leave it. No lubrication of any sort. It's always worked for me.
