Huge delay in updating this, loads has gone on, however a bit of a corner is being turned. So what's happened in the last year? Well, more shows, more shiny parts and more Haltech prep. Work is very busy, so i haven't really had time to take the car off the road and address/plan things. However, the Van's new engine is back from KAD and i've slowly built it up. It's very tarty..
Anyway, back to the little red car. Engine's out. I'm changing the cam to a Avonbar Ph2, mainly as i want more power. The MD266 that's been in there had done a stirling job, but isn't ideal for the power levels i'm after.
Plan is to also address the gear change issue and it popping out of 2nd. Glad I did, as when I removed the gearbox, there is 0.5mm play in the 1st/2nd selector, so that went in the bin, along with the selector pack. Also, the MS evo baulk rings caused the car to be almost impossible to get into 3rd and 4th without double clutching. They also went in the bin and will be replaced with Guessworks OEM ones (John, expect a DM on FB soon!)
But the real issue i've faced is the drop gears. We all know helical isn't great for high power engines, it's been done to death. However i point blank refuse to go straight cut (where there's a will, and all that). So here's what i found when i removed them from the car.
So in the first pic you can see a lot of rollers. Mainly because i removed the cage, packed it with grease and added more of them in for stability. It's an old trick some of the high power lads have used. But the wear on the cases are what i'm concerned about. The tolerance on building were spot on, however it looks like one of the shims has 'grabbed' onto the idler and started to eat away at the allow. I had to use a stanley knife blade to seperate the shim from the idler..
So what now? Well a few of you old and bold will remember this thread:
https://www.theminif...e-applications/
It didn't draw much conclusion and left it all in the air still, however Harry designed an oil fed idler gear

Colin Milne of TurboMini's fame has also done the same on his 200bhp+ BMW head turbo A Series build. He's answered a lot of my questions, but i now want to follow suit.
I don't suppose any of you know anywhere in the West Mids that is crazy enough to help me?? Otherwise i may need to beg Mr Hickey at HRE to help
