Well I suppose I should post up a few picks of mine. Now this is with 3 coats, but is still a little patchy in places as the metallic colours are very transparent and curently using 80% thiners and 20% paint as any thicker amd it's causing problems with roller marks etc.
Also none of the panels have been sanded or polished although silver isn't a shiny colour anyways and so the finish is straight from the roller.

im a decorator by trade and i wouldnt touch my car with hamerite on any visable panel surface! its best kept down under imo

As said before, the late Shawn Smith used hammerite to a great finnish, I'm going to try it with the roller method and see of simmilar results are acheivable or if rustoleum is the only option,my roof looks pretty cr@p so not much to loose! It may also help some others take the roller plunge!

Does any one know what sort of mix with thinners is best,is it dependant on the paint type or the method for painting? Hammerite recomends 1 part thinner to 2 parts paint.

Thanks for the warm commetns guys :w00t:
Ok, i'll post properly tomorrow with proper answers, but.... quickly:

Ratio- can vary anwhere from 70/30, or 80/20, i now do it by feel, with a consisitency like milk.

There are other brands of paint available, slightly cheaper ones too that all adopt this kind of method.

Rustoleum, Tractol, Tremclad, Tekloid, Hammerite.....

Also a new development, Brightside Marine paint, it paints straight from the tin and is apparently just like rustoleum except the finish is even better....

Rustoleum can be mixed to your own colour??? I had a look at the Brightside paint but it looks like its a fixed range of colours???

Indeed Graham, As I have said in the thread, rustoleum can be mixed to ANY colour, I for instance, had a tub of 'Lipari Blue' (BVL666) used on minis 1985-1991. they will do anything. as long as you can give them a code or something to sample, One guy i know sent them a little piece of coloured card through the post.

Avenue coatings in slough provide this service

Brightside, to the best of my knoweledge, has only been used in the states on a car so far.. i don't know where you'd get if from or anything... but.. it was a success and had an almost, 'permannently wet' look to it when polished.. very nice :w00t: However, the test of time in terms of fading can't be put to rest yet, but durability.. I would think boat paint that sits in salt water for it's life... would last pretty well.

Well I'm going to get myself down to b&q tonight and give this a go, i'll start on the roof as it has a rather bad black spray job.

how did you get on with B&Q's roof and how big a roller are you using? I hope they are paying well!

Looking good retro, actually, thats an understatement, looking awesome!

you should really use 4" rollers, anythin bigger is clumsy and awkward.

cheers for the comments Tomm!

If the car HAS to sit outside, don't bother, it's simply gets too cold at this time of year for the paint to cure properly.

I'm lucky as my garage saps heat from the House, hence it is a fairly constant 20c.

Retro,

You have done an outstanding job on the Mini and this is an excellect thread. The quality of your work is amazing. You sir are a ;)

Does the quality of a nice roll on job equal the quality of a nice spray job?
Does the Rustoleum paint off gas enough to require the use of a respirator?
Have you had prior experience with Rustoleum that would allow you to comment on it's long term resistance to sun fading?
Would the use of a heater inside the the paint "booth" speed up the curing process?
Will a high relative humidity inside the paint booth harm the finish of the paint (ie: solvent pop the paint)?
If one wishes to use a primer over bare steel, what type of primer should be used?
Could ordinary, albeit expensive, automotive paints be applied with a roller for the same fantasic results?
Does the roller method on work with single stage paints or would a base coat clear coat work?

Thanks, Jim

edit: Wow! I sure posted a lot of questions, don't feel obligated to spend all day answering them.
