hi guys,

A new guy started in my work recently and I found out he was quite a big mini fan and had a wee chat about the different cars he had owned over the years. he was saying about the different parts he still had and told me that he has a 999 engine in his shed minus a crank after the oil pump failed. I had to ask him twice to make sure he didnt mean 998 but apparently its a rare engine. I cant find anything solid on google so does anyone know if this is a legit engine or if he may have just not remembered correctly and if it is real then what made it different?

Adam

Almost certainly as above.  A very popular conversion in the past, know for revving very well.

I'm not 100% sure if it's true, however a popular rumour is that the 970 engine was originally developed specifically for the under 1000 cc class, by leaving that bit of meat in it for boring, allowed the Comps Dept (and others) to Blueprint the engines.

I also am told it was the same deal with the 1071 engine (for the under 1100 cc class).

Will a destroked 1275 crank on a standard bore not give you 999cc ??

I'm sure I heard of this being done on a race car used in Japan with a KAD 16 valve head to get in an under 1 litre class.

Fire engine??

By which I assume you mean the Fiat FIRE engine as fitted to Punto's and Panda's rather than a big red truck full of water and burly blokes looking for fires...............

Either way I would assume that the OP's work colleague is simply confused and actually has a 998cc rather than anything exotic, although I may be wrong.........

That's what the factory 970 was.

Yes, a 970 'S' block & crank bored to +0.020" will give 999 cc. Personally I have never liked the 970 engine - all revs and not much torque. However, they can rev to huge numbers.

This is my son's 998 Cooper with a 999 cc Cooper 'S' engine (with me driving - he lent it to me as it was my engine). It gave 85 bhp at 6700 rpm and would rev to 7500 easily. Gearbox was SC CR and it used a 4.125:1 FDR:

Isn't it +40 on a 970 to get to 999cc?

That is correct, I'm sure. It's a long time since I did that one, but I took it to 999 cc to give the best power in the under 1 litre class, which it is about to win in the photo.

If it is a +0.040 970S motor then yes they are rare, only about 1000 of these sold as road cars and maybe several hundred more as spare engines for replacement / competition use.

If the crank is goosed as result of oil pump failure anyone rebuilding this unit should check the condition of the conrods carefully, they are a unique length for the 970S and are not interchangeable with standard length 1275/1071 Cooper S rods.

Sounds to me  like there's a bit of Arse and Elbow going off here...

A 998 engine is mathematically almost 999cc's anyway, and if there's less than a thousandth of wear on the 2.543" bore it is over 999cc

So in reality... most 998cc engines are at least 999cc
