Crank Pulley Large Notches

On A+ timing chests there is a square tubular bracket. A proprietary Rover tuning system has a crank sensor that slots into there, and it reads these two notches. It's the system used for setting the precise tuning required in carb cars with open loop cats. Go to the full post

I'm planning to fit a trigger wheel to the rear of my crank pulley as I don't want to modify the harmonic damper but there is a thin flange with two wide notches in the way. I want to know what the flange and notches are for before removing them so does anyone have any ideas? I originally thought they were timing marks but they seem way too wide to me.

Pretty sure that side goes against the engine though?trigger sits on the other side?

Just a crud thrower as far as I know. Without it an oil leak (on a Mini - surely not  :ohno: ) would soon find it's way on to the belt. Cut outs for removal of pulley with a gear puller???

Thanks Ethel... it'll be going out the window then as hopefully the trigger wheel will keep the crud off the belt.

 

Coopdog: Yes it's on the rear of the pulley but there's plenty of room between the pulley and timing cover after the 'crud thrower' has been removed. I don't want to put the pulley on the outer edge as I don't want to mess with the harmonic damper which is installed on the outer side of the pulley. Also mounting the trigger wheel to the damper can lead to a minute amount of timing scatter. I'm not so worried about the tiny amount of scatter... I just don't want to modify a component which is designed to stop the crankshaft fracturing!

Some of the 1275's that had emission control (Air pump) in these parts had them fitted, though I could never see the point of what it was there for. Most of the time, the rivets would work loose, then they'd rattle. If I ever had one off for any reason, I'd always remove them.

Well, there you go. We never got such late stuff out here, but thanks for that. All the A+'s we had (from the factory) did have the square tube bracket towards the back & bottom side of the timing cover, but these didn't have that pulley!

Ah I did notice the little bracket and am hoping to use it to hold the crank sensor on my megajolt setup!

I'm sure I've had several on Mins long before cats were fitted, the square bracket seems likely though.

The tuning system wasn't specifically developed for the cat cars, it was already around. It pretty much came in with A+.
