Unreal stuff guys,,,, truly impressed here.

You'll have to build a flow bench and compare all these designs, back to back.  A flow bench is much easier to make than what you may think,,,,

I might have to investigate a flow bench as well.  I saw something online that involved a normal vacuum cleaner I think?

Just looked into the surface finish of the CAD model, cant do it as the flow sim wont know what to do with it.

But a flow bench could be an option, might have to look into it! ;)

Alex, I think mine might be 'grainier' than yours?  I imagine that's something to do with the faster print time on mine?  It'll be Wednesday before I get my carb back.

Mine was printed using 0.3mm layer height and 15% fill, took about 4 hours to print, if I went for 0.1mm layer height it went up to about 7 hours. My printer is pretty slow compared with others however I have found

I'll find out what mine was printed at, I have no idea :-)

Alex, how are you approaching the radiused inlet (red circle) of the HIF carbs?  I've drawn an extremely crude drawing (I've only got Paint available here):

I think I want to print a lip (blue circle) on the bellmouth to fit inside the radiused inlet.

I have simply added a small radius on mine, I haven't given it too much thought as I am working on the pretence that in a real life situation a backing plate will be used between the ram pipe and carb that allows a filter to be used (like an ITG Foam filter) in which case it would need to be flat. But a lip, provided it doesn't impede on the inside dia of the throat, would be a good idea but i'm not sure how useful it would be.

I'm trying to incorporate mine into the backplate as my (loose) plan is to use a different filter: the Pipercross sock I use now.  Until the virtual airbox idea comes to being...  I've drawn three more designs for my elbow idea tonight, it's getting frustrating as I can't make the click-lock snap-connectors work  >:(

I have also struggled getting snap connectors working correctly printed, but I haven't spent very long working on them. Getting the correct amount of displacement of the clips without cracking the prints as well as being able to print them without the print failing are my issues. At the moment I don't have as much time as I would like to print bits like that as I am trying to get a portfolio of CAD work together whilst also finishing my degree, but come june I am hoping to print to my hearts content!

Not sure we are there yet  ;D But there are definitely things that can be made to improve our favourite little car with these techniques!

I'm on the way to losing my rag with them :-) i haven't even got near the printing stage, it's the making them solid is my problem. Or rather, i can make them solid as a component but then attaching them to the elbow it all goes Pete Tong >:( I started looking for metal snap connectors tonight thinking I can araldite the bloody things on!

Ahh I see, sounds like you have an issue with the cad package if I am honest, I can't comment on how user friendly AutoCad is but I don't think it's hard to blag a student copy, that might help with the modelling

Im not using a CAD program, I'm using the free version of Sketchup. While it's straightforward in some ways it can be an a**e in other ways.

Thats what I mean, an actual CAD program might be what you're missing from Sketchup

it's nice to see other people doing stuff like this and that I'm not the only one who sits and draws up bits to make for their projects

I work on Solidworks everyday for a living and although it is expensive it is definitely worth the money.

Sooo much more user friendly than Google sketchup and AutoCAD etc.

our professional edition cost around £4000 if I remember right but it's more than paid for it's self in contracts that it's helped my company win.

I keep telling myself to buy the stripped down version for home (i.e. no rendering, flow works simulation, stress analysis etc) and one of the 3D printers we use for prototyping but I can't justify spending a few hundred quid just to play with >_< when I eventually get my own workshop then I will start turning all the wonderful and wacky ideas in my head into reality and maybe even make a few quid...

keep up the good work though buddy, I'll be following this but for now it's back to work...

Rhys

Latest 3D bellmouth has been produced:

ph3Ctbl.jpg

Excuse the soft photo, the borrowed phone has a poor camera.

It's a new material to me called PETG.  It seems to be a good one, though the fella who printed it said it might go soft with petrol vapours so I'll be painting some epoxy on it again, it'll give it some strength too.

H4MOrA0.jpg

On the reverse I tried to flow it into the carb as much as poss.  this bit I'm particularly pleased with, it's produced a very fine edge that fits in the carb really nicely.  Considering I did the radius from memory and guesstimation I did alright :-)

The design was set at 44mm for the HIF, it has only shrunk to 43.5mm, again I'm pleased with that.  I'll be spinning it up on the lathe for the perfect fit before the epoxy goes on.
