I have a 2004 1.8 TDCI Focus that I have had from new. It now has over 180,000 miles on the clock.

I did 30,000 miles in the first year so it gets a lot of use. I service it twice a year as filters are cheap and would highly recommend them.

In the 10 years I have fitted very few parts (list below) so have had value for money from it and am still using it for work.

Battery

Starter

Exhaust mounts

Front link arms x4 (speed humps)

Discs and pads

Water pump and belts

Tyres

4x injectors

Bulbs

Wiper relay

I'm hoping to avoid autos. But one of the people that will potentially be driving it "can't do manuals."

There is always an awkward one 😒

Another option is a Skoda Superb. Got plenty of cabin space, decent size boot and same running gear and switch gear as a passat.

PS

If you buy the Focus this scanner works great for fault diagnosis and only £15

My dad had one as a company car for a few months. Driving it was like drowning in wall paper paste. They are so dull.

It lived up to my experience I have had with fords. It drank fuel, felt heavy and suffered from electrical problems. In the end my dad's company got fed up with it and swapped it for an equivalent Hyundai I30. The Hyundai is nothing special either but so far its been more reliable, its way better on fuel and when I looked up the cost was shocked too see it was about 4k cheaper to buy.

I'd go with the VW. You will get a better car that will hold its value better.

Think I've decided on a Passat 2.0TDI now. They're far cheaper than an A4 of similar spec. And they seem better than the Focus.
