Been trying to reasearch whether i can remove the handles from the outside of the car. Obviously it is possible but I can't find any laws stating that you are not allowed.

I have installed poppers (shaved door kit) to the mini, basically allowing me to open the door without having to bend over and push the button in on the handle (my back hurts!!! :'( ) as it now opens with a solenoid operated by a button underneath my wing mirror/keyfob (i'm a lazy git me!). Had great fun installing and managed to lock myself out of the car with the engine running on numerous occasions (that problem is now sorted thanks to a few relays). I want to remove the handles and smooth them over. Does anybody know where/who i would ask if this is allowed. The car got through an MOT with the kit installed no problems but a mate said that they shouldn't have passed itr is the handles should be working due to fire risk(He says that the fire brigade need them in an emergency?????) tried asking numerous MOT stations and none of them seem to know..

Any ideas????

Well, TVRs come with a large fire blazing inside them almost as standard equipment and none of them have door handles.

The only thing the MOT can test on doors is that they actually latch closed I think.

Never heard that they are illegal before.....

If the fire brigade want to get you out of the car they will, whether you have door handles or not !

Yeah, the process that ends in someone being trapped in a burning car generally also breaks all the windows......

Will just add that it is a good idea to keep a mechanical internal handle....those electric popper things wont work so well under water :proud:

i remember some1 telling me that aslong as they can be opened from the outside without using the remote then it is ok, basically with a button somewhere that can be used to open the door. I believe the tvrs and alike cars inlcuding my old corsa! have butttons under the mirrors which serve this purpose and keep you legal

As above, you can shave handles etc, and as long as there is a way to open the
door from outside your fine.

Carry a jump starter kit in the boot that is if your not going to de-lock the boot also would need the lock as normal.
